Diesel vs gas......................

OK folks, there have been a few to many diesel vs gas threads that have shall we say gone to "Hell and a hand basket"! So if all of you would put in you BEST, no flaming reasons for going gas vs diesel, pro and con, I will either leave your thread, or copy and paste pertinant info to the 4 posts of pro and con of diesel or gas. This can include the GM 8.1 vs Dmax or Ford V-8/10 vs PSD etc too.

Be real and honest in you answers, not hear say, flaming etc PLEASE!

If posts are good ones, I will leave, if inflamatory or trolling in nature, they will be deleted! I will get this stick'd to the top for future parusing for those that need this type of info.

Added 6-23-04

We are getting closer to answers I am looking for etc.

Stuff like Ken's - T-Bone posts are good. There are a few others of you that have not posted, some with a 9 point question and answer type to figure out how you went with one or the other. If you are one of those, PLEASE repost in this thread. I may have to look up whom has done this and PM you, but if you think this is you, you now know what to do.

Also, for those of you with $ per gallon for either fuel right now, I would prefer to see a post with ...."in my area, diesel is typically .10 less than unleaded" then explain your numbers. As currently in the Seattle area, diesel and unleaded are any where from 2.05 -2.30 per gallon, with mid test .10 more and premium about .20 more, with equal high low splits. Two weeks ago those prices were upwards of .30 -.40 per gallon more. people were posting $ per gallon that were for me. "I wish" If someone is reading your post a year from now, they may want to know where your paying 1.65, when the price of fuel is over $3 per gallon. Let's keep prices out of it if possible.

Bert and tin tipi, got into a good discusion on the pros and cons of RPM's, drive train etc. I would prefer to NOT see the quote of the other in responding threads, maybe just write a quick wording of re tranny gearing, instead of the whole 40 words or so in that paragragh, so the repsonse is shorter if possible quicker and easier to read etc.

I have deleted some 15+/- posts, that were off topic etc. Please note, I am trying to keep this at the top, as the ONLY gas/diesel thread in this area. So if one is trying to decide, we do not have to go thru this BS any more. As such, I will be deleting ANY future posts close to resembling this type of topic. I may have to change "this" title to a better one, if one has a better sounding title, to be more positive, better claification, let me know here, or in a PM/e-mail, what ever you feel most comfortible with.

Again thank you for all of you that are keeping responses positive, etc.

Also we could use a few more positive reasons to go gas, as many can see I have both gas and diesel, both have a place! Both have positive reasons to buy that fuel, lets keep the threads etc to that purpose only!

Tanker,
You are injecting what you are condemning. Shame on you. They shouldn't bash the Tundra but you need to untwist your panties, girlfriend. We REALLY don't care how you use your Tundra. Run it into the ground! But you and every other Tundra owner will be the first in line to buy a Toyota diesel when it comes out. Then you will be telling us diesel is better!

And in the spirit of my Dodge.....Adios!

Gas - diesel all of it boils down to what you are going to be doing; weekender, full-time RV, size of rig, etc.

Not likely. I've read reviews on the GM 5.3 and towing... not pretty.

Toyota is offering a 4.6 V8 for 2010 even this smaller motor will give that 5.3 a serious run for its money.

No envy does not come to mind when thinking of that 5.3.

Hey Hiroshi, there are other trucks out there besides a Toyota. This is a gas/diesel thread that you are basically bringing your Fan-boy agenda to.

Besides, your credibilty went out the door with your BS comment "like it isn't even there".

Comparing and bragging it up to a 5.3? Lame... When GM introduced it, Toyota didn't know the meaning of HP. GM already makes gas engines that laugh at your 5.7.

Real world performance doesn't measure up to the hype of "the truck that is changing everything".

For some reason, you feel the need to make unrealisitic claims to glorify this 6-lugger into something it isn't. It doesn't hold up to the HO turbo-diesels and isn't really THAT much better than the 5.3 you seem so eager to disrespect. Just keep on looking at life through those Toyota colored glasses Hiroshi.... ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm with him,

As you can imagine, I know what kind of mileage he is seeing on the freeway if he keeps the speed down. That series of engine sips fuel and hums along at slower freeway speeds, but 50? I struggle to hold 60 when approaching on-ramps and merging traffic. Even in the slow lane at 60, I am getting fist pumps as people pass me two lanes over. Still couldn't get that with my gas trucks. Not even close, downhill...

I will stick with my 555 ft lb of torque, 22 MPG empty and 16 MPG towing at 50MPH.
2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. I still cant believe GM quit making that 8.1.... It was as good as it gets for running gas. Ford surely has the trophy in that area now.

I'll stick with my 5.7L 380+ HP, 400+ lbs. torque, 4.30 rear gears and 6 spd tranny.

Wow, you really make it sound like those numbers are special or something.

I guess your gas powered 6-lugger Toyota must be better than all the others, because after towing with one just like yours, it didn't seem any better or more powerful than my wife's Armada. It really works good for her going to Costco and all that. A gal can really get some heavy loads at that store!

The only factory gas engines I really see being of value for heavy towing are the Ford V-10 and the GM 8.1 I am not even sure on their rated numbers from the factory but after pulling a trailer with a 2002 Chev 2500 8.1 I know that if I had the choice between that truck a new 6-lugger with the 5.7 in it I would choose the GM 7 days a week over that. Bottom line being that ratings don't mean squat in the real world. Now THAT is a good gas towing engine and the 5.7 couldn't hold it's jock with a trailer behind it. Did it with little effort where the 5.7 would be revving much higher to accomplish the same task.

I made due with my 2000 Tundra until the new Tundra came out and then waited to gather up the cash. I bought the 2007 used, just kept watching for a very low mileage with the features I wanted, great way to get a bargain.

I put headers on my 2000 4.7 V8, I would guess I got another 40-60 pounds of torque from doing the headers. I know I could sure feel the added power when I got into the "zone".

I am not doubting your word but does a 5.7 Toyota have that much more towing capcity than a
dodge 4.7? My capacity is 6200 with the 3.5x rear end. I am thinking of
postponing the big truck payments by installing 4:10 gears. Has anyone else done this?

My 2000 4.7 V8 Tundra was rated at only 7,500 lbs with 3.90 rear end. I sold it recently.

This 2007 Tundra makes a serious jump in towing capacity with a much larger V8, 6 spd tranny, 4.30 rear gears... yes it will pull a serious 10,000 lbs. My 5'er tops out at a little over 8,000 lbs and it pulls it like it wasn't there.

Changing the rear gears in your truck would helps but don't know how much.
God Bless & Happy Trails!
