First TT Purchase, buying used?

Being one who likes to pinch pennies, I found a used Jayco SLX 184BH for sale that was only used about 5 times (I believe the owner, it's pretty spotless). Since the asking price is only $8,000 this seems like a great deal on a TT.

Now since the Jayco warranty only covers the first buyer, is this a good idea? Is there an extended warranty I could buy like Good Sam that will cover me in case I find things wrong that 5 trips didn't uncover...

The only thing that gave me pause is the 2012 Jayco SLX models did have some minor issues with the A/C leaking or the fridge not being cooled properly but given the price I can probably do these dealer fixes myself. Given that it was only used a few times he might not have run into the inherent problems and had the dealer fix them.

Being stored inside is great for extending the life of the decals and roof but it just means the leaks that exist haven't had a chance to show themselves. I would get a leak test done. I don't think I would buy new or used without one anymore.

Just doing a quick internet search, the asking (advertised) price for a 2014 and 2013 model is a little over $10,000. A 2015 is around $15,000. What year is the model you are considering.

Usually, the manufacturer warranty is only 1 year. If you can find out what dealer the owner purchased from, you (might) be able to go back to the same dealer and purchase an extended service plan (Not necessarily a warranty). However, if the original owner had the camper for more than 1 year already, you most likely will not be able to get the new camper extended service plan deal. Unlike automobile companies, you don't get offers for extended plans from RV sources like you do for your car. But the dealer may be able to help you find a suitable alternative.

On the other hand, extended service plans are not always what they are cracked up to be. For a 5 year extended warranty, you could potentially be looking at $2500 to $3000 or more. Now you're playing a waiting game. Will something go wrong with the camper so you can use it (so you've benefited by purchasing the plan ... but that means something broke on the camper), or the service plan company is gambling that nothing happens, and they just got $3000 of your money.

Another thing, extended warranties - service plans are 99% of the time limited. Lots and lots and lots of disclaimers, things that are NOT covered because of ... (fill in the dots ...) Its a very frustrating when you THINK something should be covered and you find out its really not!

I've owned 4 campers in my life: 1 pop-up and 3 TT's. Pop-up had the extended warranty - service plan. This never paid off, because the problem I ended up encountering were all paid for by my insurance. Thanks-goodness I had insurance though.

1st TT had the extended service plan warranty. Never used it. Waste of Money.
2nd TT, did not bother getting an extended plan. Turns out, even after the first year, the manufacturer covered a serious problem that arouse anyway, and didn't cost me a single penny, except for a tow truck.
3rd TT, got the extended 5 year plan. Considering we've not had the camper for a year yet, we're still in the 1st year bumper-to-bumper coverage. My dealer did persuade me to go with the extended plan this time, because this camper has much more sophisticated electronics and slides in it. The cost of the television that came with the camper would pay for itself if it suddenly died. But did I also mention there is still a deductible on our plan too!

If you want my opinion, forget the extended plan. But, before you buy, do get the camper checked out VERY good by someone who knows what they are doing. Make sure you get a clear title, and make sure you have a vehicle adequate to tow.

If you are handy I wouldn't worry about the extended warranty. Most things on an RV can be fixed without taking it to a shop.

If you want to make sure you are getting a good deal look up your TT you are thinking of buying on the NADA website, and also compare it to others that are for sale on RV trader or craigslist.

Oops, yes it's a 2012 I have my eye on. And he says it was stored inside so hopefully I won't find any of those leaks.

You didn't mention what year it is. I do believe there is a type of extended warranty from Good Sam/Camping World, but have no idea what it includes or the cost. Although Jayco doesn't carry the warranty over to subsequent owners, you might want to ask the current owner if they have the books on things like the A/C, furnace, stove and frig....those would be the items that could be pretty pricey and it's possible that those warranties may carry over. Someone just recently was asking about a TT without a slide out and this certainly would fit their needs as well. I took a peek at a 2014 and it's a nice looking unit. Although we're Forest River and Ford people, Jayco does make a quality trailer and lots of happy owners. If you haven't already done so, be sure to check the roof for any signs of cracked caulking or other places where water could get in. Also, check for a soft or spongy floor or any stains that might indicate water intrusion. Smell for any mold or mildew odor...not good. If, in fact, in was used only about 5 times it should look just like new and depending on the age, the price is certainly appealing. Suggest you take an especially picky friend or relative with you to go over every inch...the pickier the better. Hope it works out for you and happy camping!

I think buying used is a great idea.
Consider paying a qualified RV Tech to do a thorough inspection prior to purchase.
It will be money well spent.
There are aftermarket warranties (insurance policies) available, some forum members like them, some don't.
You're probably better off self insuring. JMO

There are extended warranties available but read the fine print, a lot of items are not covered. Self-insuring is probably a better financial outcome. If you have nothing major go wrong, you'll still have your premium.
