Home Dish Network while on the road.

I am a new subscriber to Dish Network. My question is: Can I take my Dish Network Genie box and install it in my travel trailer and it work away from my home? What type of dish do I need? Looking at maybe a regular dish that mounts on a tripod. I wont mind the setup. Just trying to keep costs down. I would only install it in my rig maybe twice a year when we take our longest trips. Being that I would only use it one or twice a year in the rig, I dont want to by a second box or purchase a second satellite service plan.

Also at home the box is capable of internet service. Will this be the same on the road. Does the dish need to have certain features to run both tv and internet.

As a new satellite customer I know little about the equipment and what dishes are compatible with my Genie box. Any help is appreciated.

It's my understanding that the portable auto setup type dishes like the Tailgator or Pathway X2 only allow use of the Vip 211 receiver. To use your Genie you need one of the manual setup dishes.

We did exactly what you are suggesting. Just take one of your home boxes with you when you camp. No need to buy an extra box (although they were only $5 a month when we did it that way).
We now have cable at home and the trailer satellite is a bit more difficult.
One of the satellites has a pay-as-you-go plan, where you can buy one month at a time. We have a small carryout portable dish. Once you hone in on the satellite, it works great.
The only problem we have with the P-A-Y-G plan is, every time we take a trip in a new month, we have to call to activate.
And every time, so far, we have been told that we have a past due amount. We then explain to them that the plan is a month-to-month plan that we have to activate each month we want it.
They agree, remove the charge and activate for another month.
Have to go through this process EVERY time.

We have a portable dish and it is not hard to set up. I take the receiver and a small tv out to where the dish is being set up. Makes it a lot easier to find and know the strength of signal. That being said I have been thinking about a Tail gaiter. We always get the local channels of where we are located at the time. For $7 a month (rv add to plan) it is a no brainer.

We take Dishtv with us. Your local channels will drop out away from your location. Usually we get local channels oth so no big deal to us. You can call and tell them where you are to get local back.

If you want to have the same channels you have at home it is best to get the same dish you have at your house. We purchased the same HD Dish we have at home online for around $50 and mount it on a homemade stand when we arrive to our destination. With Directv we use to bring our receivers back and forth from house to rig, but since we went with Dish network we purchased Dish VIP receivers for about $70 each and they stay with the rig.

If you have internet available where you RV I imagine your receiver could utilize it for added programming, but I've never encountered a park that provided sufficient bandwidth to view On Demand programming from Dish Network. We have Hopper system and can't comment on what to expect from your equipment. We've been setting up our own satellite dish for over a dozen years, it takes about 10 minutes to have all the same channels we have at home.

I take my home DISH network box with me. At first I used a tripod and manually aimed it. It was OK. Sometimes I had difficulty finding the signal, but other than that it worked well. Then we went to HD. That requires aiming at 3 satellites at once. That was frustrating to aim. So I got a Winegard Traveler dish installed. It finds the satellites automatically. Best thing since sliced bread.
My box is not the one you have though I do not have internet though. I am pretty sure that the internet function is not delivered via satellite.
