longevity of the 3.5L ecoboost engine

Hello everyone -

We were having such a hard time deciding on a new tow vehicle that we ended up renting a 2015 F-150 with the 3.5L ecoboost for a camping trip last week. So we got to try it actually towing our small camper (16 foot Amerilite). It did great!! It was such an amazing step up from our minivan. I had no idea that towing with a minivan was so different than towing with a truck.

So now we are seriously considering purchasing an F-150. We usually keep our cars for 8-9 years and put over 100,000 miles on them (my last Honda SUV had 140,000 miles on it when I finally sold it). I have been trying to find out how this twin turbo would do over that many miles. Anyone have input? I know it has not been out that long, so I'm not sure if we know yet how long this engine will last....

Skipnchar on this site has been towing a much larger trailer than yours, with a F-150 Ecoboost for several years. He is an experienced RVr and will not give you any BS. He has commented on here that he is very pleased with the power & towing capabilities.

I don't know exactly what year his truck is, but you could PM him. He isn't on the site a lot but he will probably reply as soon as he sees the PM.

Do watch the payload available on the truck you buy. Some 1/2 ton trucks don't have much. Remember that the tongue weight of your trailer is part of the cargo.

Turbo chargers have been around for a long time. Back in the '80s when they first started to be used heavily they were temperamental and unreliable. Today they are tried and true technology. Just another part of newer technology, like anti-lock brakes, backup cameras, direct injection, etc. that make up our vehicles. Vehicles today are good for 200k+ miles. Do post searches, especially on vehicle specific forums, the vehicle discussions are almost never are around longevity, but things like payload, towing capacity, engine power, and features. I would not hesitate by a turbo charged vehicle if it fit what I was looking for.
