Would you give up your LP oven/cook top for a convection microwave?

The answer likely will depend upon how you plan to use your camper; If you always have shore power available (I seldom do) then a convection-micro can easily replace the LP oven. Personally, I would never give up having an LP cooktop.

I currently have an LP oven/stove and a Dometic convection-micro'. The Dometic unit is is a very versatile cooking machine as it can microwave, convection bake, or broil (they call it "grill")โ€ฆ plus it has a few combo modes which will micro & bake or micro & broil. In some regards (especially temp' control & cooking speed) it performs better than the LP oven. IMO the only downside is that it is power-hungry (~1450W) which means shore power, or running the generator, or the truck engine.

Cheers,

We had a new f/w for 2 years before the camper and the oven was never used. So it was an easy decision when we place the order. We replace the oven with m/w conv. when we need to use it, we start the gen. And more cargo space

Nope. We use the cook top and oven much, much more than the micro. We do mostly dry camping so that would mean cold food. I hate running the generator at camp. Generator will only get occasional use for lunch on the road. We have eliminated campers from our purchase list because they had a convection oven.

During our recent 7 night trip we only had electric once and I did use the microwave to reheat my coffee that got cold. Other than that I have never used it and could not cook in my kitchen without the range.

I wonder if it is a generational choice as much as a lifestyle choice. I've been using microwaves to cook for over 40 years and my bachelor life consisted of toaster, blender, microwave and hot plate. Even a few year stint in commercial food preparation used microwaves and convection ovens with fryers and griddles...

Ours came with an oven, so what the heck, we use it. Muffins, banana bread, pizza. No fish though.

Stovetop is great when we're not setup somewhere, but just need to heat up something quickly or make coffee.

As a full timer I can go a year using the range top and oven on a tank of propane.
We are self contained micro is nice but we could get by without it but not the range.

This thread has been hashed and re-hashed many times on the cooking forum. And it really boils down to what kind of cooking one does. There are folks that eat to live and those that live to eat. I would never give up my oven.

Oh Heck yeah! In fact I'm thinking of ripping out my enemic MW and gas range (burners OK but oven sucks) and replacing the whole mess with a 4 burner cooker top (hob) and a big MW/Convec oven and throwing the current MW out and using the space for storage.

My new camper came with a microwave, We do almost all our cooking outside so I have no use for it. I've ordered the door. The storage is much more useful to me.
