purchase advise: used Jayco x213 or new Jayco x213?

Hi all,

I have been lurking for sometime and learning a ton from the wealth of knowledge this forum provides! We are finally ready to purchase our 1st travel trailer and are stuck on a decision I hope you can advise on: purchase an '09 or '14 Jayco x213? We are pretty much sold on this layout, the question is are the tradeoffs of used worth the price break? A few more details about the two trailers:

09 jayco: pros $8k less than the new one, cons: I am tall and the slide out bed (which goes side to side across the trailer) is borderline long enough for me, the tanks FW- 30g/ GW- 30g/ BW- 22g, the top bunk is 10" narrower than on the new one, and various small item things that will need to be fixed (e.g. door strut $25). otherwise the unit is in really good shape, it has been stored outside, but has been used very little.

14 jayco: pros- tanks FW 46g/GW 30g/BW 30g, 2 year warranty, wider top bunk, slide out bed is a king sized and goes long wise down the trailer so as not to confine me with a wall... cons: price is +$8k, insurance and tax will be more as well.

We are not rolling in money but we can afford both units. The question is as an RV newbie I really don't know how much those pros/cons will matter: can you advise? My kids are small now, but I plan on having this trailer for long enough for them to get big (~10years). I should also add most of our camping will be done at places with none to minimal hooks ups- e.g. state parks. hoping to buy soon

Jayco comes with a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty and they stand by it totally. On my 3rd Jayco.

Just from personal experience- Those short beds are miserable for a tall person. Kids grow-bigger bunks are a good idea, as is a bigger FW tank. I would get the new one. The warranty gives you some peace of mind, after reading some of these used TT horror stories.
If you keep it 5 years, how old will the used one be?

I think the point is that the OP can afford either unit, the $8,000 is completely doable. Satisfaction is priceless. All too often in life I have cheapened out, got a lesser product because it was a couple of $$ cheaper, and rued the day. More often than I would like to admit, I then went back and did buy the better product also.

If you can "live" with the differences, $8k (plus taxes, etc. Plus you will have to carry full insurance if you finance) that $8k will pay for a LOT of camping fees.

That's my thinking anyway.

I would go for the new one for several reasons.
1. You can afford either.

2. New gives you more room to expand as family grows.

3. Tanks are larger which will give you more flexibility during dry camping which you say you prefer.

4. You will have a warranty with the new one.

5. Old one was stored outside so there could well be hidden leaks from lack of roof maintainence - even if you can't see it from the inside.

6. There is nothing like that "new trailer" feeling! 🙂

is the construction the same? is one roof TPO and the Other EPDM? etc. I would buy new with warranty, etc. myself.
