RV park "camping"

Is there anyone who actually camps any more?
As a youth camping meant loading up the '55 Ford pickup with tents and sleeping bags, the old Coleman ice box and stove and heading for the forest. When dad bought the first camper it was a single axle '66 Shasta with modern things like a refrigerator that needed no ice and a water heater. Since then I have owned several TT's. Until March of this year I had never stayed anywhere with full hookups.


As an electrician, last week I located and repaired a broken underground wire at a RV Park and it got me thinking about "camping". Talking to a few of the customers at this park made me realize this was not a stop along the route to empty the holding tanks and fill with fresh water, but the destination. I do enjoy having the fridge and a hot shower, and the last few campers I've owned even have a bed that is not part of the dinette or couch. but staying in a RV park is not "camping" as far as I'm concerned. Anyone else camp where there is no wireless internet and the closest electricity involves putting gasoline in a generator and pulling the rope?

I don't go camping to "get away from it all". I can do that at home. I live on 12 wooded acres with a stream. I adjoin National Forest. I am about 15 miles from the nearest traffic light. Anytime I'm in a campground I'm in a more urban environment than at home.
We go traveling. We tour around the country to see the sights like museums, rivers, lakes, national parks and landmarks, etc. With 3 young children it's much nicer and easier to stay in the RV in a campground than in motels.
I wouldn't necessarily mind camping with a tent, sleeping bag, etc. but if I want the wife along it's an RV or nothing.

Tented from when I can remember to 1964. Then popped up with my parents till 1973, then tented in the Marine Corps in the caribbean and the Mediteranean and North Carolina for two years, then tented as a civilian till 2005 then popped up till May of this year and now have a 21.5 ft TT with a flopped axle that will get to places no larger RV can but we still have the tent and supporting equipment for things like the Magruder trail where you ain't takin a trailer and better bring an extra tire or two... http://jeffhead.com/magruder/index.htm

I suppose here at some point we may go the parking lot RV route if we can't hike anymore but putting it off as long as possible and not wanting to be one of those guys driving one that shouln't be.

Having grown up in New Mexico with an outdoorsman father, I thought getting in a homemade bedroll (usually surplus Army blankets, etc.) and rolling up in a tarp on the ground in the Gila Wilderness was normal. As a young adult I (and my wife when I got married) progressed through a couple of tents and then a Westfalia VW camper. Since we always used primitive areas I still considered this camping. Nowadays, as full-timers with all the modern amenities, I don't call ourselves campers... I just say, "We are RVers."

I've done all kinds of camping, from backpack camping to staying in a full hook up campground. I love it all. I guess the big difference for me is, we don't go to a campground and just stay in the campground. It is a place for us to see the sights.

I did lots of camping. I've moved on. I'm done with that. I bought an RV so I didn't have to do that anymore.
