Support Trailer

Well with a family of 5 and a Lance 830 it became clear that to make the truck camper work I need a support trailer. I just picked up a Carry-on 5x8 utility trailer with wood floor and steel sides. There were too many things cluttering up the floor space of the camper (laundry bag, trash bag, duffle bags, toys, multiple pairs of shows (each), water bottles, etc.)

I can also carry more items like firewood, extra propane, barbq, additional chairs etc. to make the outdoors more comfortable.

I have come to realize that with a family this size I cannot carry everything I need only using hitch mounted cargo trays, and the inside clutter adds up making the camper feel even more crowded.

I believe the use of a truck camper is maximized with a small utility trailer or enclosed trailer as support. Hopefully photo soon.

Please post photos of your support trailers/experience.

Legend trailers in Michigan makes a good aluminum trailer. They also make high end fish shanties with tvs and reclining chairs. They are like a camper on skids.

I love my little 5 x 8 utility trailer because I can unhitch it and push it around a tight campsite without having to use my truck. I make use of this convenience just about every trip. The down side to an open trailer is the dust! Everything gets covered with dust!

I have started making a tree to clamp into my 5x8 to conveniently hold our kayaks, paddle boards and bicycles. This will leave the bottom of the trailer open for firewood and supplies in Rubbermaid bins.

Those enclosed trailers look really nice BUT the ability to move my little trailer by had is really nice!

We just got back from a trip to Hunting Island SP in SC,so I am late in seeing this topic. We use our utility trailer on almost every trip we take to haul our large scooter and other items. On this trip we also took along our inflatable Sea Eagle 380 'canoe'(it is the silver looking items rolled up near the door). As you can see, we also take along a lot of other items in the trailer, including a camp oven (seen in one picture next to the trailer on aluminum table, spare tires for trailer and scooter, portable black water tank, and we have four extra bins for clothing or food storage.

Also pictured is the modification I made to the trailer's tongue to create a larger step area; it has really helped a lot.

...Pace Trailer.---my understanding is Pace went bankrupt about 5 years ago....someone may have bought the rights to the name since then though.

I had heard the same think about them going bankrupt, but the naming rights thing makes sense because I still see them at dealers too.... they sort of "reappeared" a year or two ago.

It's called the "slippery slope syndrome" (aka, snowball effect)
In other words, more stuff means "bigger trailer"

All these posts got me to thinking that maybe I should carry a recliner and satellite tv in my trailer. But then I would need a fridge and a table. And then I would need batteries and solar. Heck, throw in a porti potty and I wouldn't even need the TC!! But I wouldn't have room for my UTV!!! LOL

I'm going to take the wheels & hubs to remake an old home made trailer better. It was a flat bed 8'x 12' with 480x8 Studebaker wheels (yes Studebaker, I said it was old), AL hubs and axle use to carry a catamaran. Rebuild into a 8' x 10' with the 14" wheels from the above trailer and a SnoCap top 65" high. A SnoCap has an aluminum tube frame and Jeep type fabric cover. I'm boing for a very light trailer.

Progress pics would be interesting.
