tire wearing on outside

Not sure if this is the right forum, but thought I would start here. Hubby noticed when we parked our camper at our latest stop that the rear right tire on our 35ft Cougar has worn badly on the outside. We check our tires pretty much every time we stop. We left NC about two weeks ago and are now in Illinois. Any advice on why this tire is wearing?

Do NOT let a dealer try and fix anything that they *think* is wrong. Go to a frame and axle shop.... A dealer will probably just want to separate you from your money.

Do NOT just replace the tire thinking that will solve it.

In addition to alignment, a bent axle or spindle and possibly the spring hangers, it could also possibly be a loose wheel bearing.

You really should determine why it happened. If you go to a frame and axle shop, you might even find something else that needs attending to.

Oh, I see you solved it!

Finally found a utility trailer dealer in Montana that solved our problem. This place was recommended by several people in the area. Had to have both axles and springs, shackles, etc...all suspension system replaced. Seems everything was too small for our size trailer. We were very pleased with the service AND the price!! One couple we meet at our campground comes all the way from Canada to buy his utility trailers from this place. So far, after a month of traveling, everything seems great. Before, we could see wear on the tires within a week.

I had a boat trailer aligned at a specialized alignment shop. They would work on any trailer. Good luck.

Well...we can find NO ONE besides an rv dealer that even look at a travel trailer. Question for Bull Rider... Did you have all your work done at a dealer or where!!

If you're in farm country, try asking at feed and farm supply places. Somebody has to service horse trailers etc.

Also:
Depending on the facility, some U-Haul operations do this kind of work. And if not, they might be able to point you to someone that does.

Well, now more problems! We are headed to Springfield, IL with camper... Called a heavy duty truck place, they don't do campers. He referred us to another place who then referred us to an alignment place... NOBODY seems to do travel trailers. Anybody know anyplace in that area or have another suggestion?

Ok...went to a camper dealer near where we are to find a tire dealer. While there, we told him our problem...agreed it was probably alignment problem. He told us about a product called Correct Track II... which lets you adjust the alignment easier. Anybody ever heard about this? , Nice dealer...Did not try to sell it to us...Just recommended it and said to look into it when we "landed" somewhere.
Correct Track is a way to adjust the tracking of the axles only. This will adjust how square they are to the frame. It will not allow for adjusting the camber and toe in or out, of the axles. A quality alignment shop can set these using a rack and hydraulics to push or pull the axles into alignment. They will also set the tracking without going to the added expense of installing a Correct Track.

Find out what is wrong first.....bent axle, bent spindle, broken suspension parts, sagging springs etc.

Commercial truck or trailer shop..not an rv shop.

The Correct Track will not straighten a bent axle. It will also raise the trailer a few inches putting additional stress on the spring hangers. Do what was said above, see a heavy-duty truck facility and get it done right.

Ours sounds like yours, Bull Rider. Right rear tire. Will get hubby to check what he can and go from there. We have had both axles replaced since we got the camper in 08... One from an accident, and can't remember why for the other one. We had to replace leaf spring on that same side about a year ago from hitting a large pothole. Off to find a reputable (hopefully) the dealer.
Don't waste your time at a dealer. All they can do for an alignment problem is sell you another new axle that may not be straight. Go to a heavy duty truck/trailer alignment shop. They will check everything and straighten it up as needed, all for less than a new axle will cost.
