Wanting to buy a TT

We are thinking about buying a 76 Coachman. Its a 28 foot. The floors are solid, the copper piping looks brand new. Theirs a window or two that have plywood over them. I was told that the water and sewer tanks were hardly used because they were direct hook up. It was used by the home owner while their house was being built. Other than a good cleaning in and out i personally dont think its a bad deal. But have never bought or owned a TT. I want some input on what yall think. Hes asking 2500. Thank you.

Seems like a lot of $$ for the age. Roofs on these are notorius for leaks, especially after all these years, and as was said, rv appliances & fixtures are very expensive.

What are you looking to do with it? If its to park someplace, that means once you get it there you don't have to worry about lights, breaks, running gear and you can probably use materials from any home improvement store to do work on the interior.

Or, if you want to travel, might be more of a project to keep it maintained. Check out the Tin Can Tourists. Its a group that is dedicated to vintage rv's. Everything from as-is to full restoration to factory new. Some of their members have some amazing rigs, but those restorations are like classic cars - total money pits.

I wouldn't buy it unless you are ready to spend an unknown amount of cash to make repairs and update ac, fridge, etc. If you haven't owned an Rev before, take some time to learn about the applinances and systems that are found in RVs. Then, set your budget and buy something that will meet you needs but is only a few years old and not likely to need expensive repairs.

Also, do your homework about tow vehicles and towing weights, capacities, etc. Until you have done quite a bit of camping/traveling with an RV, you won't really know what will work best for you. If you haven't got any experience, start with something smaller that keeps your costs down, and then, you can always sell it and buy accordingly.

A 35+ year old trailer is only worth scrap value. I wouldn't buy it, it has no value to me. If you are seriously considering it, $500.00 tops or walk away. At $500.00 at least you'll be able to get most of your money back out of it. In my opinion, your just buying your next headache and weekend fixes until you throw in the towel.

That's about $2000 too much for a 1976 Coachmen.

Sounds like they took the travel out of the TT. What are you planned to do with it?

Its being sold by an rv place. The heat is new and the roof ac does not work. Their is a window unit that works. The fridge is electric.

The refrigerator is very expensive to replace. Be sure that it is working. Just do not take there word for it. Hot water heater, furnace, and stove should also be checked out. Can you plug in a microwave?

Are you capable of doing major repairs? Or can you learn?

Although $2500 may seem cheap, I would have an RV service man check it out. This is a unit that has been sitting for almost 40 years and could have hidden damage which could make it worthless. The frame could be rusted through and there could be hidden water damage unless the owner has been very diligent in his maintenance over the last 3 decades;). If it has been parked on their property all this time, have they kept the registration up to date. Get local expert advice before proceeding.
Good luck,

Leaks, you can't look close enough---every surface in the trailer. Other than that, do the appliances and furnace/AC work?
