Waste valve replacement

Can a handle type Valterra be converted to cable operation? My travel trailer has cable operated waste valves. I priced replacement cable operated ones and they are a lot more money than the ones with a handle.

Obviously a re-seal kit won't care if it's used on a handle or cable valve - but I have read that by the time the valve is old and leaking just replacing the seals likely won't work. So I'm expecting I'll have to replace the the whole valve.

I don't have a handle-type valve here to compare to cable type, or I'd just crawl under the trailer and compare.

I recently replaced both my tank valves, with the Valterra ones. Be very careful when installing these, or any other cable operated valves. There are certain clearances for the cable to operate correctly, and close all the way. Also, you will almost have to disassemble the valve body to install it on your unit. If not done right, it can crimp the seal, causing leakage. Don't ask me the details of how I know this, had to shower twice to get rid of the mess. Once you figure it out, it is pretty easy to install though. Just take your time.

Call Valterra. They have been helpful to me in the past and even responded quickly to an email I sent.

If your cable and handle are still OK, you can order just the valve body. I got these part numbers from Valterra's website:

T1001PBC 1 1/2" Valve Body w/Coupler, Seals, Hardware 14.19
T1003PBC 3" Valve Body w/Coupler, Seals, Hardware 16.48


Price for each under $20. BTW, those seals typically last a very long time. What makes you think they need to be replaced?

I don't know about converted per se. But, you can buy both cable operated, and just standard pull valves at Camping World. Cable operated is handy, whereas the handle only would require crawling underneath my trailer to drain my tanks. I am sure that is why a lot of trailers come with the cable operated, due to where the valves are mounted.
