And boy oh boy was it quiet. A bit breezy much of the time but when it wasn't blowing you could have heard a cricket fart. And yes, it was spectacular...

I grew up in Pennsylvania and now, for the past 50 years, I've lived out here in the Nevada outback. My eastern friends often ask me why I choose to live in a place so isolated. From now on I will just give them the link to this post of Dave's. It will explain it much better than words ever could. A couple months ago I had to attend a funeral in upstate New York, that reminded me what hustle and bustle, and noise 24 hours a day, mean. I was very glad to get home.

As far as the sage grouse, after having observed them for so many years I have come to the conclusion that they are the dumbest bird alive. Must be a close relative to the dodo bird! No wonder they are about to be put on the endangered species list! They will stand on a road and be run over instead of getting out of the way. So far I have had two of them kill themselves by charging into the side of my dirt bike, and the government is paying good money to have people put flagging on fencing because the sage hens fly into the fence and kill themselves.

Dave & Lynn,

As always, thanks for dragging me along. The photos are stunning. The quiet out there must be so deafening you strain your ears waiting for a sound. Just awesome!

Thanks,

Tim, I remember the first time we were in a place that quiet -- boondocking in the Eastern Sierra. Both DW and I were trying to figure out what that noise was -- whoosh whoosh whoosh -- sounded like a pump was on somewhere. (We have spent all of our lives in the urban roar of Southern California.)

Looked under the seat -- nope, the water pump was off.

It took us a few minutes to figure it out.

And now it ain't boondocking without that soundtrack!

The Owyhees are so quiet that my heartbeat annoys me! Magnificent desolation.

One other thought -- now that you've gone to the back of beyond in the Owyhee, have you thought about the Jarbidge area? You are pretty close to it, and I'd bet that it would be no tougher than the trip you just took!

Outstanding again. That sure does look like a great place to not get lost - or stuck.
To me personally, the only time tamarisk "salt cedar" trees look good is when they're dead. They choke waterways and use an enormous amount of that water. In many places they are being removed as the landscape allows. Plus they grow so thick it becomes impossible to get to the water, something we like to do when it's warmer.

Could not agree more. You've seen the same thing ruining Az rivers, as have I. Trying to get through it is no fun at all.

Man, what a way to start one's day. Absolutely FANTABULOUS, Dave, even more than usual. You and that camera must have really come to terms that were agreeable to both sides.
Got to share a quick story, if you got a sec. I was reading the double down, Wimpy commentary and burst out laughing. Marilyn (my absolutely better half) asked what was up, and I relayed your comments. The funny part was a week or so ago, we were talking and the subject of hamburgers came up. I struck my best Wimpy pose, and said "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today". Marilyn just looked at me like I was a bit off (not to say that I'm not), and said what? I replied that she obviously was not a Popeye fan, and explained. I really found it funny to see that same line in your production.
Happy travels, my friend.

Great pictures Dave!
I was just up through that area from Elko to Boise. Cold and beautiful. The Wild Reservoir area and following the river below the dam was a wonderful drive. Looked like lots of camping opportunities. Take care,,,

Brilliant! The video of the dogs on the ice is very funny. The video of the truck crossing the ice is filled with suspense -- will he make it? And the photos of the clouds and the sunsets are jaw-dropping. Great post!
