Windy in Philly

Hi All, So we are in the Philly area where it has been very windy the past few days along with the snow and rain. I have an appt to drop off trailer to get work done but the wind gusts will be near 40. My question is how high does the wind have to be where you do not tow in it? I have never towed with winds this high but have experienced some wind gusts of 15-25.

IMHO 40mph gusts are no big deal. Sustained with higher gusts (60mph or higher) are better to go slow or stop for a break while it passes.

Of course that also depends on the truck and camper setup you have. If you are already borderline on capacities and length, etc, it might be better to sit it out.

The more margin you have in your setup, the better your rig will handle it when your entire setup is "pushed around". Just be aware that above 40mph and at 60mph+ you are getting into "tip it off the wheels" territory, independent of your towing vehicle.

Of course, this is all subjective based on your setup, rig size, comfort level, etc. It's what WE would do, but if you aren't comfortable, have an extended lunch break and enjoy the scenery while waiting it out ๐Ÿ˜‰

IMO, there are too many factors involved, like wind direction, roadway surface, bridges over rivers which the valleys create wind tunnels etc .

I would think an empty box (like a TT) would be more susceptible to being blown over opposed to loaded box.
It would probably help in a windy situation to have a full tank of water keeping the COG lower.

I noticed a big difference in hauling truck campers with slides and no slides. Slide model had basements, making the unit taller and YES I could really feel the difference in crosswinds.

IN any RV type : If winds are more than a steady 25-30 mph, I feel more comfortable holding off till they die down. Too much chance for a strong gust from the wrong direction to take me by surprise.
Big box store parking lots sometimes rock ! :B
