A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

I never had a "poopeater" but you might pick up all the poop in the yard so she has nothing to munch on.....is it one particular dogs poop that she goes for or just any????

Good morning everyone. It is cloudy and 34 degrees here this morning. The high today is supposed to be 39 degrees. I guess I will build a fire in the fireplace and enjoy being inside.

I am so put out with Peaches I don't know what to do. I think the only way to stop her from eating poop is to put her on a lease every time she goes out in the yard. At night she wants to go out for the last minute go potty before bed time. She is sneaky in that she really doesn't have to potty she wants to cruise the yard for a last minute snack. If I go out with her she won't leave the patio deck but stand there looking at me as if saying "What do you want and what are you doing here?" This morning Sue let the girls in while I prepared their breakfast, She didn't notice Peaches didn't come in with Suzie and Hobo. When I had their food ready and went to put it out for them I notice Peaches wasn't inside. I went to the door and looked out and she was eating poop. I am so disgusted with her for doing that and she is not helping herself as far as me wanting to keep her around if she should get sick. Yesterday when we went for a walk she took off on her own and disappeared into the woods. She can't hear. can't see that well but she sure can put up a fast pace when she wants to go somewhere. We walk a trail that makes a circle into the woods that starts behind the motorhome and and ends up back at the house. She walks the path just as if we are with her and always ends up coming home. Sometimes when we go out she thinks we are walking the path, so she will take off on her own and end up back at the house. I hate putting her on a lease because that is about the only exercise she gets, I don't know, just let her be for now. There isn't real danger for her doing that but there is always the exception, a what if situation. But if you are going to "What if yourself" you can make a case for never doing anything.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. The Super Bowl is history and Cam Newton was handed a large piece of humble pie. I have never been a fan of Cam Newton, don't care for his on field displays showing he still has a lot to learn about true leadership and true sportsmanship. That beings said let's move on.

Izzie is really doing well. I am so glad he has made such an improvement. Now to continue to watch him and make sure he doesn't get in that condition again.

Suzie, Hobo and Peaches are well. With the cold morning they don't stay outside too long before wanting back inside. We are going to see some very cold weather for us Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the thirty's. This coming weekend we plan to go to Calhoun Falls State Park. This is a beautiful state park located on lake Russell that borders Georgia and South Carolina. This is a local favorite for campers and fishermen. Back in the day when I had a bass boat Scott and I used to fish in the lake. Back then the lake was fairly new and when the lake was built the engineers planned fish parlors. Fish parlors are where the timber was left standing in a cove with a path around the edge so a boat could go through and fish the interior of the cove. We caught a lot of Small Mouth bass and a lot of Bream in that lake.

Scott posted a picture of his truck hooked to a Sunny Brook 5th wheel camper on Face Book. I thought he had bought a camper but it was his mother and his step dad that bought the trailer, Scott just pulled it home for them. Says he will use it on occasion as he will allow them to use his truck to tow with.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. It is 35* here this morning and very cloudy. Super Bowl Sunday and the Carolina Panthers are playing the Denver Broncos. May the best team win, how's that for being politically correct?

Izzie is doing great. He has really recovered from whatever was wrong. He is eating wet food and drinking plenty of water. He met me this morning in the bathroom telling me all about his night.

The girls are doing well and Sue is doing great also. It is hard to believe we have been married for twenty seven years. Time flies when you are having fun.

Okay I need to get moving so I will wish you a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. We had a wonderful day yesterday. Last evening we went to J Peters in Fountain Inn to celebrate our anniversary. We had most of the family with us. Scott and Robin and Billy live far away so they couldn't make it.

Izzie continues to do well. Sue and I are going to get firewood this morning to finish out the winter with this last load.

Suzie, Hobo and Peaches are well. I noticed Suzie has a lot of white or gray hair under her chin. I am not ready for her to grow old. She and Izzie are a part of a legacy of Old Fella. Dan and Lori have Anna and Sarah which are a part of the legacy also. I have lost count of the others, there are so many that passed through our lives I can't remember them all.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. Well Izzie sure feels better. He was up this morning greeting me when I got up and jumped into bed with Sue. However there wasn't any poop in the box when Sue checked it. He is eating wet food along with dry food and Sue is putting coconut oil on his paw and nose. I guess by Sunday we will know if he is not able to move his bowels. It is a beautiful morning here with clear skies and lots and lots of sunshine.

The girls are doing well. Got a report from Joshua yesterday there had been an accident with Buddy and Rex. It seems Joshua was play fetch with the two boys in the back yard when there was a hard collision between the two. Rex lost both of his lower canine teeth, while Buddy escaped unharmed. Josh took Rex to the Vet in Durham, NC but the news was both the lower canines are gone and he will most likely have his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth the rest of his life.

I hope all is well with everyone and the weather isn't too bad where you are. We will be looking at some cold weather for the next few days.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

According to the weatherman we can expect winter to come back to us the rest of the week. Below freezing at night with temps in the upper forty's. It won't be long before we start to see a warming trend. Robins have been visiting us in flocks so I expect the weather to turn spring like in a few weeks.

You have said this before we have traveled to your home to get there and see snow. :B:B:B

Richard and Sue: May you have a very Happy Anniversary tomorrow and be Blessed with Many More.HUGS TO YOU BOTH
