Old Fella had finished his lesson for the day and decided Suzie had enough for one session. After all she was still a puppy and had a lot of growing up to do. Dad had spent most of the day working outside washing the truck so Suzie watched from her vantage point in the back yard. Suzie began to recall some of the puppies that had come through the house and then had gone on to other homes. It was then she remembered one puppy named Woody. Woody was a sickly little guy when he first came, this was when Anna was gone to her first home. Woody was so skinny and weak from his ordeal of being in an animal shelter having to fight for his food. Woody wasnโt a fighter, it just wasnโt in him. His sister Queenie on the other was a dominant female able to take care for herself. When Woody arrived at the house Dad put him in a crate all his own. There he could rest and eat and gain strength. Woody had quite a tale to tell.
One night as Woody lay in his crate next to Suzie he began, โHow long have you been here?โ
โOh, about five months now.โ replied Suzie.
โSo I guess this is your home?โ Woody asked.
โI hope so. It sure is better than that old dumpster I used to live at.โ Suzie smiled and turned her head towards Woody. โBoy it was rough out there,โ she continued โwhere did you come from?โ
โMy mom and sister where brought to an animal shelter and put into a holding pen with a bunch of other dogs and puppies. After a while mom was taken away and I have never seen her again. I was told she died there and my sister and I would also die if someone didnโt come and rescue us. Then the man you call Dad came and got me and my sister, carried us to a hospital to get us checked over and then brought us here. So what happens to us now?โ Woody asked.
โDad will give you the best of care. You have nothing to worry about because my Dad will see to it that you get everything you need. Then when you are ready he will find you a nice home.โ Suzie was glad she and Woody had talked as she now felt better about him and his sister being in the home. Suzie felt that Queenie was a bully and would have to be taught some lessons, but she would let Dad do that unless she was pushed into a corner and had to defend herself.
The night went peaceful with Suzie keeping a watchful eye on Woody. He was such a frail little thing about half the size of his sister. You could tell his bones were weak as his front leg joints bowed out away from his body and he hurt as he walked. The next day Dad came to the crates and let everyone out to the back yard. Woody hobbled along as best he could with his painful joints. Suzie waited at the door for him. Queenie was waiting at the bottom of the steps for Woody to come down. Just as Woody reached the bottom step Queenie jumped on Woody and knocked him down then went on her way. Old Fella looked at Queenie and said, โDonโt you ever let me see you do that again or you will have me to deal with.โ Suzie chimed in and said โYeah, the same goes for me too.โ Listen you whipper snapper you better mind your manners as well.โ Old Fella gruffed as he went on his way. Suzie was just letting Old Fella know she agreed with him, but hey, Iโll just sit back and watch.
Woodyโs recovery was remarkable as he gained strength every day. He was such a cute little guy with that black patch over one eye. One day a doctor and his little girl came looking for a puppy and Woody caught their eye. It wasnโt long before they all knew Woody was going to his forever home. Suzie remembered Woody and thought how wonderful it was that he was rescued just like she was and found a home. She then began to wonder if she would leave her Mom and Dad for another home. With a prayer she thought I hope I get to stay here the rest of my life. I donโt want to ever leave Mom and Dad. They are the best thing that has ever happened to me. That was a few months ago and Suzie was assured by now she had found a place in Dadโs heart and with each passing day she gained confidence that she was truly at home.
