A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Let's get some excitment going. I just reserved 3 camping spots and was told with these 3 we were up to a grand total of 8. Come on people, let's get this thing on the road. For those of you that may not know, the rates are going to be $26/night and the deposit is $25. We just signed up to come in on June 4 (Wednesday) and stay through Sunday leaving on Monday. I do hope there is a bigger turnout than what have pre-registered so far. Lori, Anna the rescue and I will be keeping our paws crossed.
I was told that we will be in the same section as the Rally was in 2006 in the area of the Celeberty Station. Michelle told me tht there is another Rally going on the same weekend and the next weekend and they have a couple of Rallys that have the whole campgrounds reserved for their rallys. Even have a Rally scheduled in August!, so please get your reservations in as soon as you can.

Richard the above is quoting from your last post. When we said that little did we know you, Old Fella and Sue would be responsible for giving us a very important addition to our Family our Granddog Lola A/K/A Sadie. From day one she has just been the sweetest most well
behaved furchild we have ever known. In about 3 weeks it will be Lola's Birthday. The kids decided her Birthday would be the Anniversary of the day she came from Georgia to Missouri. It will soon be one year but it seems like she has always been a part of the Family.

I still have pictures on my computer of Lola. She is such a beautiful dog and so well mannered. It was a joy to see her find such a wonderful home. Maybe you can bring her to the Old Fella Rally in Branson, Missouri next June? We would love to see you..

AN AMAZING JOURNEY

Good Sam members help drive a disabled dog from Georgia to Washington state

Paula Loehr
GSC Highways
Tuesday October 2, 2007

Good Sam member Richard Daniels, who runs an animal shelter in Waynesboro, Georgia, spearheaded an effort by RVers to transport a disabled dog to her new home on the other side of the continent.

Anna, a Labrador retriever who had a leg amputated after an accident, was relayed from RV to RV across the U.S. in an effort that was coordinated by postings on the Old Stray thread on RV.net, which is affiliated with the Good Sam Club. Annaโ€™s journey started at Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue (OFBCAR) shelter that was founded by Daniels, and ended at the Spanaway, Washington, home of club members Ryan and Beth Eaton, who had agreed to adopt the canine after reading about her on RV.net.

The journey garnered attention from news outlets across the country, including NBC News, which covered Annaโ€™s journey during one of their nightly broadcasts.

โ€œThe volunteers are the best and I cannot praise them enough for their dedication and hard work,โ€ says Daniels, who frequently posts information about the stray dogs who reside at his shelter.

Annaโ€™s story started in January, when she was found abandoned on a Georgia roadside after having sustained a near-fatal injury. Irene Pitts, an OFBCAR volunteer, nursed the dog back to health after she received life-saving leg-amputation surgery.

After the Eatons offered their home to Anna, it didnโ€™t take long for what Daniels calls a โ€œchain of caringโ€ to form as RVers from all parts of the U.S. eagerly participated in helping transport the dog. In June, Anna finally reached her destination.

The Eatons have given Anna a new nameโ€”Tiaโ€”and they report that sheโ€™s settling in well at their home. โ€œIโ€™m glad weโ€™re getting the word out about adopting rescued animals and volunteering with the rescue effort itself,โ€ says Ryan Eaton.

Anna isnโ€™t the only canine who has been saved by Daniels. In 2006, Daniels rescued Old Fella, a black dog that he found wandering in a South Carolina campground (see โ€œPuppy Love,โ€ Highways, May 2006). After sharing his experience with fellow participants in the RV.net thread, Daniels received encouragement and donations to establish a shelter in the name of the dog that he rescued. The result is his own state-licensed shelter.

OFBCAR has expanded to encompass numerous volunteers and 12 foster homes caring for more than 40 dogs and puppies plus a page on petfinders.com. Approximately 100 dogs have been saved since OFBCARโ€™s inception and have been placed in new homes.

Once again the season was changing. The mornings were cool as the hot breath of summer gave way to autumnโ€™s fresh breeze. Fella lay in the yard to relax and enjoy his newfound reprieve from what seemed like lost years, now reclaimed. The sun was coming up in the east and cast long shadows over the yard from the nearby trees as the birds were busy at the feeding stations scattered about the yard. Suzie was busy chasing the squirrels as they gathered the fallen pecans to put in the winter storehouse. Suzie had made a game out of terrorizing the little rodents as they had to keep one eye on her as they ventured into the yard. She really didnโ€™t want to catch one it was the sport of the chase that thrilled her as she circled the base of a tree listening to the chattering of the squirrel as it scampered up to safety. Fella had even gotten into the chase a time or two trying to forget his old body and aching limbs and once again embrace the fond memories of his youth.

As he lay surveying his kingdom and all the riches he had gained in the past two years his heart swelled with love and admiration for the family he had come to know as his very own. He and the family had just returned from a camping trip to the beaches of North Carolina, a place he had never been before. He had watched Suzie as she ran and played in the sand and ran from the waves that rushed up on the beach as if she were being pursued by some monster that would consume her if she were caught. He thought of her as his own pup after all he had watched her grow from a small puppy into the adult she had become. She was aggravating at times with her insistences of getting him involved with her games, but he tolerated her playfulness and actually enjoyed watching her tireless energy as she would chase Izzie the cat until he would jump up on a high perch out of reach and there he would stay until Suzie would at last lay down and take a nap.

Levi was the balance between Fella and Suzie. He would allow himself to be pulled into her games for a while as she would tempt him with a ball, laying it down in front of him and then snatching it up just before he could reach it. If Levi ever was quick enough to get the ball first Suzie would chase after him trying to get it out of his mouth. Often Levi would lay on his back as Suzie would paw over him and nip at his feet and legs barking excitingly as he would also chime in with his rendition of โ€œGee, this is fun!โ€

Then the back door opened, Fella saw Dad standing on the back steps to announce breakfast was served. He knew he would be last in as Suzie and Levi would run past him to get inside but it didnโ€™t matter to him as he knew his place at breakfast was secure and waiting for him. The golden years of his life had changed into a paradise away from the hardships of the campground he endured for so many years as a stray. He knew he was loved and his home was a forever place as long as he lived, it just couldnโ€™t get any better than this.

The days hurried by as the family was counting down the days to the rally in Branson. Richard was relieved that Fella had weathered all the health storms and was now doing very well. Excitement was growing in the forum as folks anticipated the rally and finally getting to meet the old black dog that has stolen everyone heart. Just before Fella was to leave for Branson and the rally the city of Waynesboro had a surprise for him. City council recognized Old Fella and the Mayor named June 22nd as Old Fella day in Waynesboro. The local newspaper also had a big write up about the family and how Old Fella was changing Waynesboro and the RV.Net forum.

A new beginning for an old stray
Falling for Old Fella
By Elizabeth Billips True Citizen Associate Editor

Although Old Fella doesn't quite fit the celebrity bill, nearly 85,000 online readers from California to Canada are rejoicing in his story.
But Old Fella just thumps his tail on the hardwood floor, content with a full belly and the prospect of a late morning nap.
He's got his own agent, a book about his life, and there's even whisperings of a movie.
But Old Fella's idea of excitement is the jingle of the leash and the rattle of his treat jar.
The good life, they say, the easy life ... a new beginning for an old stray accustomed to scratching fleas and begging for bread-crusts.
Old Fella's recent stardom sparked off last Labor Day when Waynesboro residents Richard and Sue Daniels caught wind of him while "RVing" in Modoc, S.C.
He was old, ugly and stank to high heaven. He was missing a paw and nearly all of his teeth. His ribs jutted out like a shipwreck, and his face was mottled with a fungal infection that made the stomach turn.
Old Fella hung out at the Daniels' campsite and made friends with their Australian Shepherd, Levi.

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Old Fella before the Daniels took him in

He tentatively took their handouts, but wanted no part in petting and patting.
The camp host said he'd been roaming the camp for at least five years, living off leftovers and minding his own business.
"Old Fella's normal procedure was, 'I'll eat and leave,'" Richard says, as a much fatter Old Fella snores softly at his feet. "But for some reason he decided to hang around with us."
Like thousands of campers before them, Richard and Sue gave Old Fella a good meal, then put their RV in drive.
But unlike the others, Richard couldn't shake the image.
At home, he kept returning to the photograph he'd snapped of Old Fella. He stared into the dog's tired eyes and tried to shake the odd sensation that there was more to it.
"Those eyes were so haunting," he says. "I don't think I'd ever seen anything like them in my life."
Richard took his dilemma online to the "Open Roads Forum" where he asked fellow RVers, "What would you do?
Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take its course?"
They answered back with a resounding "go get him," prompting Richard to act on the feeling that had gnawed at him for days.
"I felt sorry for him but I wasn't about to bring him home to be our pet," Richard says while he wraps Old Fella's stump for a romp down Jones Avenue. "I wanted to give him an opportunity for another life ... but my whole intention was to carry him to the vet and find someone to adopt him."
That was no easy feat. Richard returned to the campground three times in one week, and couldn't spot Old Fella on two of the tries. When he finally found him and tried to lift him into his truck, Old Fella bucked and bristled and got away. Then, on Sept. 12, one week after he posted that pivotal question, Richard returned with sausage biscuits, seven sedatives and a city worker.
"I thought you were going to bring me something to work with," the veterinarian told Richard as they heaved Old Fella onto the exam table. "This dog doesn't have much of a future."
Old Fella was a pitiful specimen, Richard admits. Beyond the obvious, his old heart was riddled with worms and on the verge of giving out.
The veterinarian offered to put him down right there on the table - to give him an easy death after such a hard life.
Richard thought about how Old Fella had fought him so fiercely at the campground and knew he could never do it.
"You see, I knew he had a lot of life left in him, and I had to give him a chance," Richard says. "I had to find out what he was made of."
The following weeks were painful ones, and Old Fella nearly died as dead heartworms filled his lungs.
The Daniels' cat Izzy curled up next to his head, and Richard sat by his pallet through the night.
A church in Los Angeles kept an all-night prayer vigil to St. Francis, and donations to cover the vet bill began rolling in from around the world.
Online supporters checked the forum at all hours of the day and night, waiting for a word and living out the drama from offices and bedrooms miles away.
Richard contacted The True Citizen last October when Old Fella was through the worst of it. He hoped a dog-lover would read the article and offer to take the dog home.
Their telephone never rang, but Richard soon found his own calling ... one revelation at a time.
"The first revelation came when Levi was pestering me," Richard said. "I said 'Levi, sit," and Old Fella sat. Then I said 'Levi, lay down' and Old Fella lay down."
Richard figures Old Fella was a pet who visited the campground with his family.
He thinks Old Fella got caught in a steel trap while exploring the woods and chewed off his foot and broke out his teeth trying to get free.
"The family probably searched for Old Fella, but eventually had to leave without him," Richard says as Izzy arches her back and rubs against his legs. "I think Old Fella had been roaming the campground for five years ... looking for his family."
Fittingly, Old Fella found his family with the Daniels' next revelation.
The old dog, they decided, was meant to share their home.
Old Fella is mostly mended now, save the bad limb he hobbles on like a peg-leg pirate.
His story won't die either, thanks to the network of RVers who keep it pulsing on the web.
As Old Fella putters to the mudroom and begs like a toddler to be taken around the block, his whole story still begs the question: Why do so many people care?
The True Citizen asked, and RVers from across the states piped up.
"We are all looking for common ground to draw us together," Mark Lipman of southern Orgeon answered. "What better than a lame old abandoned dog rescued by a southern gentleman with a gift for pulling heartstrings with words?"
Ron and Shirley Knoche of Missouri concur. The snowbirds had flown off to Texas when they found the postings on line. They stayed up reading the story the better part of the night, laughing, crying and cheering the old dog on. Checking the site is now part of their daily routine, and, though they've never met,
the Knoches consider Richard, Sue and Old Fella part of their family. Gary Shapiro, a Colorado RVer, is also hooked. He says the real life story has all the makings of a good novel - an underdog, interesting characters, humor, drama and a happy ending.
"Although this story is, on the surface, about a dog, it is actually much more than that," he says. "It represents the best in people."
Did you know?
RVers are gathering in Branson, Missouri this Saturday for the first annual Old Fella Rally.
Waynesboro Mayor Jesse Stone signed a proclamation declaring June 22 "Old Fella Day."
Old Fella will be Grand Marshal of the Pooch Parade during downtown Waynesboro's Dog Day of Summer celebration on July 20.
