A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Wonderful teaching opportunity!! These are the citizens and future voters in Waynesboro. Should make you very proud, again another way Old Fella has touched lives.

Yesterday Sue and I walked the fur kids to the city park. When we got there a school class was there having a picnic. The kids were from a second grade class. Anyway when we got there they were gathered around the Old Fella Memorial statue while a teacher told them the Old Fella story. Ivy, one of the students saw us coming and said, "Look, there is Mr. Daniels with some Old Fella dogs. Without hesitation they all came running to pat the dogs.


When the kids gathered around and started hugging and patting them Hobo didn't mind at all. Mama just loved it! She sat there and just enjoyed all of the attention while Suzie, well Suzie ran around my legs wrapping the leash tightly around my legs trying to get away from all of those midgets trying to get their hands on her. Peaches was very loving and enjoyed all of it. Suzie is not your sweet little lady that is going to allow just anyone to touch her, after all she isn't a lay down. Nope, she is a Southern Belle that demands respect and politeness. A real lady just doesn't associate with anyone who isn't proper and she had not been properly introduced to these strangers. It takes time to develop a relationship she says. So if you want to come calling you first have to have permission to come to the house and not just walk up to her on the street, a lady has a reputation to keep, you understand?

More good news! I just found out, not only is Forest River sending me new 16” tires and aluminum wheels with the chrome lug nuts and chrome center cap, but they are also sending me the Trail air Equa Flex suspension system so the 16” ties will fit under the camper. That is what I call service!

Good morning everyone. Yesterday we had a lot of rain with some thundering and lightening for the dogs. Mama was a little concerned about the rumbling and flashing going on, but not Hobo, go figure? Last night Mama didn't like her bed for some reason and wanted to lay on the floor. I fixed the bed that Peaches usually sleeps on for her and so they swaped beds for the night.

May is here and June will be here before you know it. Sue and I are looking forward to the Old Fella Rally in Ohio, it's going to be a lot of fun. Old Fella Rally in Ohio

I hope we can have some more folks sign up as the campground looks very nice.


Evergreen RV Park and Resort

I am still hoping to bring Mama and maybe Hobo along with the rest of the gang so the folks can meet the new additions to the family. Forest River has come to my rescue with a new set of wheels and tires for our camper so the trip should be without worry of tire failure.

The brick walkway is still gaining in popularity and is doing well. With the way it is going perhaps we can have the memorial walkway complete this summer. If any of you are interested in helping with the bricks just PM me and I will get back to you. I think it is a wonderful idea and will be a great addition to the memorial statue. We have the city's approval to proceed with the project so it is clear sailing from here.

Sorry to hear Wolfie is so stressed out in the MH. Have you thought of a large crate to put him in when you are gone>>>Putting things of yours, like a shirt or towel in the crate can comfort him when you are gone
Henry has destroyed the window screens by jumping at them when he sees an animal outside,,,,I have a large crate but hate to keep him in it all day when i am at work. He is fine when i am home and can correct him

Gentlespirit, you can put plexiglass over the screen. This would prevent him from tearing up the screen.
