Thom has a good route. From Montgomery, AL we have gone that route, but prefer: Birmingham, Nashville, TN., Paducah, KY., St. Louis, MO.. Kansas City, Sioux City, IA., Sioux Falls, SD., then straight across the state going by Wall, The Bad Lands, Rapid City, SD.

Have made this trip several times and really enjoy the area. Have fun and may God keep you safe.

Hey Jim,

I've done your route as well, from B'ham back to Colorado and it's a good one. Wish there were more diagonal routes from the Southeast to the Rockies! Guess there are some if one doesn't mind getting off the interstates and exploring.

You might be a candidate for Mountain Directory both East and West to help your route planning.

"Best" is always subjective, depending on one's priorities. Based on your criteria of not going through the NC mountains, seems like you'd have to go around them. That would likely mean going south to Atlanta, then taking I-20 west to Birmingham, I-22/US 78 to Memphis, then either head up to St Louis and go across the central Great Plains, or take I-40 across Arkansas and in to Oklahoma, and then go north from whatever preferred route you may want to take -- there are multiple ways to get there.
