US-70 from Roswell to Ruidoso to Tularosa is a good drive with relatively easy grades. US-380 to Carrizozo is easier on grades, but not as good a road. Through Cloudcroft is an exam in mountain driving.

If you want to avoid grades, the northern route via 60 is only about 35 miles longer.

Clovis to Vaughn to Alamogordo is easy...60 West of Ft. Sumner to Vaughn isn't as good as the Clovis to Ft. Sumner portion. You won't encounter grades like the Ruidoso Downs or Cloudcroft route, altho 70 from Roswell to Tularosa has been straightened out and modernized some.
