East Coast Route

I did a earlier post about a month ago about my west coast to east coast trip and back. I'm towing a 27ft. travel trailer.

I've decided to reverse my route. Instead of going from north to south I decided to go south to north from Virginia to N.J.

1.I'm going from Cherry Hill RV park in College Park MD to the KOA in Clarksboro N.J. Any tips on that route especially getting thru Baltimore?

2. I'm staying at the KOA in Clarksboro N.J. and driving into Philly for the Liberty Bell, etc. My understanding there are underground parking lots close by.

Any tips on parking close by and do you need reservations to see the sights by Independence Hall?

When leaving the KOA in Clarksboro I'm going to Liberty Harbor campground in Jersey City.

I need help on the best route getting there.

3. Any way to avoid toll roads? It looks like I-295 to I-95 to I-78 is the most direct route. Should I just bite the bullet and pay the toll, (probably $$$) or is there a better way?

It's been 27 years since I been to the east coast and that was only in the D.C. area.

Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the explanation. Camping in an RV near large cities can be tricky.

I understand your reasoning but with all my reservations already made it's almost impossible to change dates for numerous campgrounds and make the stars all align again.

This the way we Go - Bing Map

Toll at the Bay Bridge and DMB is free going North so sort of wash - No heavy traffic till Delaware.

OR if you drive through Annapolis and the Bay Bridge on a weekend Late or a Thursday or Friday in the Summer.

Best Of Luck,

Thanks. I will definitely consider this route. Leaving Cherry Hill park on a Sat. morning to the KOA.

Then leaving the KOA on Mon. morning heading to Liberty Harbor RV park in Jersey city.

If it's anything like SoCal I assume the traffic is just as bad on weekends as any other day.

This campground (formerly Timberlane) just became a KOA this year. I've stayed here several times because it's an easy first leg when going south. Other than the KOA sign (and an increase in price), the campground is virtually unchanged. The old dark lodge-style office was brightened up and is more inviting. There is a section in the back for the permanents and a section in the front with mostly all pull-throughs for transients. Another good feature of this place is that it's open all year.

Sometimes you have to pick your battles.

Staying at the KOA because of it's proximity to Philly.

I don't make a habit of staying at them. Probably stayed at 4 or 5 over 30 years.

I'm only spending 1 day in Philly for the historical sites.

Again, where is the best place to park that's close to Independence Hall?

Plan on going I-295 to I-676 from Clarksboro N.J. to Philly.

Appreciate the advice so far.

You cannot take propane thru the tunnel in Baltimore. Use I-695 over the Key Bridge.

Many of the roads in Philly are quite narrow, just to be aware.

On days when nothing big is going on, the stadium complex ("Xfinity live") offers free parking, and there's a subway station right there. I've found that to be a convenient way to see things, but it's not the only option for sure. Their web site has the schedule and some details.

There's plenty to see and do in both Philly and DC to occupy one for quite some time, a few weeks at the least. The Philadelphia Art Institute is one of the finest art museums anywhere (and is enormous); I feel a little sorry for those who go there and only re-enact a scene from Rocky.

I'd rather go to Philly than nyc.

When you go to Philly, use the PHLASH system to get around to the historic sites. We really enjoyed Eastern State Penitentiary. Check out Al Capones cell.

No reservations are required at the historic sited.

If you take 295 up to 195 and get on the NJ turnpike there It will be $22.40 to exit 15E.. That is the best way IMO.

Unless you have oodles of time to get up there you can try to cut through but you will not be happy... Its well worth the 22 bucks.

Thats the best place to get on the turnpike. No need to get on earlier. 295 up is a nice ride. Some traffic area but it moves...

Not sure why your going to Philly... Nothing there and is worse then NYC IMO. Traffic, etc etc. Just a bad area.

It would be better to go see and stay a few days @ historic Cape may NJ, and do a 20 min ride to wildwood and see the historic boardwalk there.

From there the parkway up to exit 142A is $29.10.. Thats a nice ride . But trafficy after the raritan bridge.

As far as from maryland just take 95 and get around baltimore best you can. then 295 to the Del/memorial bridge.. Get in NJ as fast as you can.

Dont ride up PA side. You will not be happy.
