forced winter camping sucks!

The family is currently "camping" in the drive way and while I'm extremely thankful, I can honestly say, summer camping is way more fun!

A week ago, the oven went from self clean to self distruct ans caught fire. It was amazing how quick it went bad. I hung in there after the family got out and put the fire out. I did have the call the fire department for help because of all the smoke. The house is being treated for smoke damage. Not thrilled that insurance isn't going to cover the 7 year old oven so essentially my deductible is now 2500 instead of 1000.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Check out BCAA Insurance. That's what we have & they are supposed to be the best in BC. But compare apples to apples.

I don't know about Canada but I just reviewed my HO insurance this morning. I have replacement coverage on my appliances. That adds $20 to the premium. I have extra for computers and that is another $20. I also have protection for water damage for extra charge. You just have to specify what you want and be willing to pay for it

If all goes well: we should be back in our house Wednesday. Fortunately, it hasn't been that cold but still burning through the propane.

It's one thing to WANT to camp in your RV when you WANT to for RECREATION, relaxation, or vacation. Even drive way camping is a lot of fun when you WANT to do it.

Unfortunately, when you are in a position where you MUST, or HAVE TO do it, or you have no other option and you absolutely have no other choice, what was once a joy and pleasure, fun and exciting, can become a real burn-out .... real fast!

I've run into the problem, with a couple "hobbies" in my life, that turned into an "occupation." Once they became a full time experience and there was a need for dependency, I burned out very quick, lost the joy, the zeal, the fun, the excitement, and eventually changed, and never did it again!

I have heard many stories about folks in your exact position who were forced to use their camper for a home (for various reasons), when they were forced into a position they had no other choice. More than one has said, they sold their camper and never wanted to see another one again. Sad, but true!

I certainly hope you can find a way to keep the "joy" using your camper (even during this challenging time), and you still have that "joy" and "passion" for camping and your RV that you did before the fire!

Find a way to keep the 'camper' experience .... even in this cold weather, a positive experience. If you loose the "passion" because you burn out, because it just TOO MUCH right now, that will be a really sad thing.

I hope this experience doesn't change that for you.

Good luck, and visit a lot of family .... anything to get out of the camper as much as possible!

The way I read the original post, Greentreena, the OP was inferring that they had to camp out in the driveway, because of the oven fire smoking up the house.

What was the brand and model number of the oven? I've never heard of or seen a RV double oven or even one that has a self-cleaning setting.

I have Canadian direct for the past 12 years. This is the first time I've ever had to call them. The main oven was in self clean mode and the lower oven caught fire. The wife and mother in law take meticulous care of the kitchen so I'd be very surprised if the oven was that dirty.

A big problem with insurance is that the policy holders don't take time to read and understand their policies until they are facing a loss.

What I found when I was shopping for insurance was that companies will not allow a potential customer to read the proposed policy until after tbey buy it. So we cannot choose based on details of coverage.

Example: My home owner's insurance policy does not cover the cost to repair or replace a broken water line, but it will cover any water damage caused by broken pipe. It will not cover the cost of replacing a malfunctioning appliance but cover the house and contents if they are damaged by a fire caused by that appliance.

Good to know. What company do you have?

Why should we pay for it? Its not a maintence policy. The oven did not work as it should, this is not a covered loss. I have been adjusting claims for 30 yrs. and I am amazed what people think should be covered Glad you and your family are okay

I am very happy that the family is safe and sound. However, this illustrates one of the reasons people dislike insurance companies. By your logic if my furnace malfunctioned and burned down the house I would have to buy a new furnace out of my own pocket. Is it the same with an electrical fire and I would pay for the wiring of the new home? Who said it was a maintence issue in the first place? Are you saying if any system in the home malfunctioned and caused damage it shouldn't be covered? How ridiculous would that be? While I understand that home insurance doesn't cover wear and tear I believe it does cover catastrophic loss. I would certainly contact a private adjuster or attorney in a case like this.

Get a "public" adjuster to work for YOU. The insurance company is out to spend as little as. Possible. If you don't know exactly what your coverage is,they're not going to tell you. We had a pipe break while we were in Greece in 2001. The first floor and basement had to be gutted, furniture (antique) had to be repaired,Oriental rugs replaced and a thirty year collection of water color paintings repaired and reframed.

The insurance pushed hard for us to settle for $80K...eventual total bill was $273000. Our adjuster was worth his weight in gold. They should be paying for the use of your camper or putting you up in a hotel. You should be reimbursed for every added expense caused by your loss.
