Grapevine/Tehachapi

Planning to leave tomorrow from the Central Valley to Indian Wells (new at the snowbird gig).
Snow and high winds are being projected over both these routes.
Any suggestions...please!

If I go from Sacramento to 395 and South to Palm springs; what kind of passes and road should I expect? We have driven East Oregon from Bend down to Carson City and back via Shasta, don't mind the 2 laners and love the scenery. Looking at early April.

I hope the OP made it ok -- very high winds everywhere in southern Calif right now -- lots of trees down, and we don't have that many trees to spare!

That is the route we've taken for many years. 395 is fine. Straight easy drive. There are a few traffic lights through Adelanto but not much of an issue.

From I-5 to 99 take 7th Standard rd near ButtonWillow. Very easy route, no traffic.

no problems, if I remember there is 4 signals but good road from the 58 to the 15

In that case, since you are heading to Indian Wells, you couldn't pay me to take the Grapevine when 395 is available. I even take 395 when I'm going to Disneyland just to go around Los Angeles traffic.

Take the grapevine but first check to if its not going to snow. The winds on the 58 will be a disaster

I've not seen snow stick on the highway during daylight hours at Tehachapi. Winds tomorrow are forecast for 10-15mph which isn't bad at all.

Where are you headed? Would 101 work instead? We often head to Paso Robles area. Have gone 101 or 5/Grapevine or Tehachapi many times each. Recent trips I've preferred the latter to avoid L.A. traffic. 101 is second best but I take highway 126 from 5 to 101.

I likewise prefer Techachapi. I also watch a number of weather apps - Wind Alert, one of the best - and do not leave until it looks safe.
