If you don't need hookups, sites will be very easy to come by if you stay away from the populous places during the weekends. We made a fall run last year starting mid Sept to Niagara Falls and to Acadia by 1 Oct, then back home by mid October. We only reserved at Acadia because there were 3 campers together and hit it on the weekend. We stayed at state parks and NF campgrounds except for two nights when others in our group wanted power.

I hear Gettysburg is worth it even if you aren't into history.

If you stay in commercial campgrounds you may have a better shot at getting sites. Move during the week no on weekends. You can also look on www.woodalls.com and search for "open all year"
I-75 to I-40, stop in Sevierville TN (we like River Plantation RV Park) drive through Smoky Mt Nat Pk. Especially Cades Cove if it's open.
Connect to I-81. Stop over Ft Chiswell RV Park Max Meadows VA.
KOA, Luray VA. (Skyline Drive, Caverns) Pricey KOA but one of our favorites!
In PA, Gettysburg - Artillery Ridge Campground.
To see Hershey PA we liked the KOA in Elizabethtown.
We liked Bald Eagle State Park, Howard PA.
Near the NY border, we like Ives Run Corps of Engineers Tioga PA.
Owego NY: Hickories City Park.
may be out of the way but we love The Villages at Turning Stone RV Resort, Verona NY. (shuttle to casino)

One of my favorite state parks for Fall colors is Ricketts Glen in PA. 22 waterfalls along a 7 mile hike. One of the campgrounds stays open all winter - no hookups, but bathrooms with hot showers.

Some photos from a few of my visits.

North Bend COE Park at Kerr Reservoir is a great place. Water & Electric sites. Half price with Senior Pass. Look for John H. Kerr Dam on recreation.gov it's in Virginia about 50 miles west of I 95 exit 11
