Highway 1 or 101 south of Fortuna.

I am currently in California on highway 101 in Fortuna. I will be heading south in a few days, I know there are parts of the highway 1 that a 33 foot motorhome should avoid. Can anyone tell me what sections I should stay clear of? Thanks.

I do have one more question, any tricks for a freezing up refrig? The coils are icing up in the back.

Well we made it down to Bodega Bay last night, we are in a private campground, Bodega Bay RV Park, BUT, we did get to stay at Manchester Beach State campground and it was "simple" but wonderfull. Highway one has been a challenge, but amazing too. This has been qyite a trip so far. We will be heading to SUNSET State Beach tomorrow. Hopfully its as nice as Manchester.

Steve, sorry I just saw your follow up question here so this may be too late for you. There are campgrounds along the coast on the route your planning, but you are smack dab in the middle of peak camping season on the California coast. It may be difficult to find vacancies, especially at State parks. You may have better luck with the private RV parks.

If you've already made the trip let us know if you found places to stay. I personally would never head over to the coast in the summer unless I had reservations someplace.

It's a doable journey especially in a 33 footer. I've done it in my 35 footer with no problems. And there is a shoulder on most of the road. The northern part of 1 from Leggett into Marin County is more windy and steep than the parts of 1 South of Monterey, but I'd still do it as it's a great drive.

I have found that when people on here tell you to avoid Highway 1 like the plague and how scared they were when they did it, that when you look at their signature line they are from Florida or South Carolina or someplace where mountains don't exist. If you're used to mountain driving then Highway 1 is not a big deal, but do be careful on it and use the turnouts to let the idiots pass or they will try and pass you across the double yellow whenever they can.

If you are comfortable driving curvy roads with no shoulders and sheer drop offs, you will have no problem navigating Hwy 1 from Leggett south in a rig your size. I have driven that section in a 34' motorhome towing a Saturn and also in an extended cab truck towing a 36' tt. I would not attempt it in our current 40' dp towing our Ford Edge. A better choice if you don't feel like the challenge of this section of Hwy 1, would be to take Hwy 101 south to Hwy 20 and then head west to the coast. You should have no problems from there south, depending on how far south you are headed.
