We are going to be traveling in July from Idaho Falls to Mountain Home, Idaho. We pull a 40ft 5th wheel with a 1 ton dually. Is it a better route than taking the interstate around?

As others have said, wide two lane so plenty of room for others to pass. If you've got the time, stay overnight in Arco at either Mountain View RV Park or the KOA, we've stayed at both and are both nice. Then take the tour at EBR-1, first nuclear power plant. Visit Craters of the Moon and drive up past Mackey and visit the earthquake site. All interesting. At the intersection of Hwy 75, there is a nice rest area with plenty of room for you to pull in, but there are other wide shoulders for you to pull over too along the way.

We love that drive, too...very scenic. When we traveled it the few times, there wasn't much traffic on it at all...pleasant.

It's primarily a 2-lane hwy, but very driver friendly & open. By all means take it & avoid the interstate. If you drive 55-60 as I do, even on the interstate it won't take any longer & it is a shorter distance. Be sure to fuel up in Idaho Falls, there are few places between there & Mtn. Home
I'm an expert in only one field....I believe it's somewhere in Kansas.

I can't recall if there are passing lanes, but I suspect there may be some. Seems at least several of the major US routes do have them - perhaps about every 5-10 miles or so, depending on the area.

There are rest areas - again, not real frequent, but there is one between Idaho Falls & Arco - complete with some RV parking, restrooms, etc.

The big advantage of 20 over the interstate is that it's more scenic, IMO. And not a whole lot longer.

Thanks for replying! Are there passing lanes? Always hate to cause problems for people passing, although I do try to keep the speed limit!

That's actually a good road and the back way, straight across from Idaho Falls to Mountain Home. It'll take you longer just because it does cross farming communities and you have to slow down, but it's a pretty, scenic route and goes through Craters of the Moon National Monument. I drove that entire route, my first lesson in pulling the fiver with DH in the passenger seat. The interstate is direct and faster, so it just depends on what you like, back roads to take it nice and easy or the interstate.
