Hwy 99 Red Bluff to Sacramento

The wife and I will be heading south from Oregon to Southern CA and are getting tired of I-5. We have taken Hwy 99 from Stockton south but have not taken Hwy 99 between Red Bluff and Sacramento and are thinking of going that way this year.
I was wondering whether there are a lot of traffic lights and whether there are areas to pull over to stretch our legs and walk the dogs along that portion of Hwy 99.

Thanks

We drove that route last May. It was a nice drive, much 2 lane so slower but a good road. We stayed on old 99 al the way to Yuba City( instead of routing onto 70, a freeway) where we stayed at the fairgrounds; realy nice rark and reasonable. water/power dump availabe. 99 and I5 are fine UNTIL SAC, where both 99 and I5 go to *^%$$ south of there, both have good and TERRIBLE stretches. The 395 suggestion is a great one also, if snow permits depending on time of year.
