Midland Trail Route 60

Has anyone driven the Midland Trail (Rt. 60) in a motorhome? It runs from Virginia to Charleston, W. Va. Suppose to be very scenic but from the map it looks like it winds and twists a lot which might not be RV friendly. Any info would be appreciated!

If your MH is nimble, you'll enjoy the drive. There is a long downgrade into the Charleston area. Don't bypass the Hawks Nest overlook since the scenery is worth the stop. This is the site of one of the worst industrial disasters in our history. Pretty fascinating history. Been there many times and researched the history.

Douthat is a nice place and not far from Interstate 64. The drive on Rt 60 to see beautiful sights is not what you think. The area around Lewisburg on 64 is some very pretty country!! Stop at Tamarack near Beckley for a wonderful lunch and shopping. Good RV friendly place with great parking on the hill under the main building.

Driven it through, but not in a motorhome: US-60 Charleston to connection with I-64. I know I could get my motorhome through there (big trucks used the route for almost 50 years) but would really rather not.

I've explored pieces of 60 east of that, some of it is more like motorcycle road than RV road. At one time or another I've driven most of US-60, in pieces, from Newport News to Fort Sumner. It comes through the middle of my town. As an alternative to the Interstates that replace it along the way, sometimes it is reasonable for travel, sometimes it is just nice for a leisurely drive. Western Virginia, it is leisurely scenic drive.

As a through route, you will be on I-64 to get through some of the places where there is room for only one road, and the Interstate replaced the old highway.

We will be leaving from the Edinburg, VA. area with a possible stop at Douthat State Park (but we are flexible).

I would not take Rt 60 unless your motorhome is small and nimble. There are some really beautiful sights along Interstate 64. You will get tired of the twisting curvey roads. Where in Virginia are you coming from??

Really crooked and hilly. It can be done since I know 18 wheelers used to travel over it before I64 was completed but it is not for the faint of heart. It is a really scenic drive and if you have a smaller motorhome you should be Ok but if you have a big rig you might want to reconsider. I have only traveled it from Sam Black Church to Charleston so I don't know about the rest of it into VA.
