Anyone have a policy that covers pre-existing conditions? Doctor ordered a CAT scan and I discovered that it is considered a "treatment" with my current policy even if the results are negative. I have checked some plans on the internet. Waiting for a broker to call on Monday. Looking for actual experiences with a plan.

OP's problem is pre-existing conditions. Read your policy for pre-exisitng conditions. It's there on page 15.

If you are over 54 a pre-exisitng condition is back 6 months (3 months under 54) and it states you are not covered for that ailment.

Yes...true, but you can be covered for everything other than the one particular problem (or anything related)....and yes, that can be a wide open interpretation. But, if test result is negative, that would be an advantage if a claim was made. I only suggested Desjardins as they seemed very helpful compared to many others I spoke to.

portliz..I want to add...that any travel insurance company will move mountains to avoid paying out on a health claim, so, if there is the slightest opportunity for them to do so, they'll say no and then you are into a very expensive fight and flight. And, because you have posted openly on here, I'd be very very clear to an agent and have it all very clearly spelt out.

So true Gary. Many horror stories of people owing hundreds of thousands of dollars because of what the insurance company considered pre-existing.

My decision to go will be based on the results of the CAT scan and doctor's advice. Gary you are right. At this point though there are no symptoms and the doctor is expecting the CAT scan to come back normal. If it doesn't then I will know that I am dealing with a medical issue that needs to be treated.

"Once stable" can take a few days and 1000s of dollars.

Portliz...by this point in reading, is it maybe not time to consider not going this year? I see you are now looking at a medjet policy, so that suggests there is an actual medical concern. Time to think with the head and maybe not so much the heart?

Thanks Lorne : Those are two of the companies I am checking out. This travel insurance stuff can be stressful. We have friends who owe a pile of money for a glitch in their travel insurance. Stress level through the roof for them. I think I am also going to look into medjet so that if something happens I can be flown home once stable. You can blow through $150,000 in a big hurry. This over a diagnostic test that I probably didn't need.

I have clarified my previous post to indicate that for an extra premium, it's unstable pre-existing conditions that TuGo covers (up to $150,000). Stable pre-existing conditions are covered under the normal premium. At one time (and they might still do so), the Snowbird Association's Medipac would provide specific quotes for such situations.

Drinking before you have a blood test.
Why would you????

Actually, if you have been drinking and you (say) fall and break something, if a blood test is taken and it shows the presence of alcohol it's grounds for the out of country insurance folks to deny your claim. As Canadians we are still covered by our provincial health plans but the higher health care care costs in the US means we are on the hook for the difference.

I'm fortunate to have out of country coverage that includes pre-existing conditions, it's part of my retirement benefits. It's provided by Sun Life, you may want to contact them.
