As Mr: Russ said there is protectionism involved, the US has it for certain products, otherwise everything would be cheap Chinese junk, Mexico opened the border to the automakers prior to that they had to have factories, Ford, General Motors, Chrysler already were manufacturing some parts so technically you could bring one of those makes in, later on Renault started a factory and you had french cars, after that I believe Nissan started a factory, of course Volks Wagen has had a factory in México for a long time, my wife worked for VW Mexico for several years.

Mexico needs to protect that industry, it is a source of jobs there are also factories of parts that supply the auto industries in the states, older vehicles are OK, I had a Mitsubishi Montero for more than 20 years, until it was cheaper to buy the Suzuky than repairing the montero.

Well it is cerveza time.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander

Immigration laws EVERYWHERE must be obeyed

But apparently some piggies are more equal than others

One-sided laws between two countries enables massive counterattack by the opposition political party in the unenforced immigration law country.

Get the drift?

Mexico is setting themselves up for an armageddon grade response.

Don't bother with the personal responses to this. I am a Mexican citizen.

I would hate to see the population of Mexico grow 15% in one year's time...

Amazing people can't understand the concept of complying with LAWS! They are surprised when they are deported from Mexico for an expired tourist visa. REALLY? You're surprised? Good grief.

Sure wish our country would enforce our immigration laws.

I used the term greased as in the automotive sense, pun intended.

I just ask:

Puedo cooperar para las cervezas?

I just love how you use the term "greased"......like it never happens where you live - it's called protectionism and it happens every where everyday.

We arrived in Ciudad Satelite Mexico City in July, we had the full intention of importing the toad, surprise, surprise no vehicles bellow 2008 can be imported period, unless you want to pay one and a half of the blue book, guess what they use the on line blue book of course the higher price not the lowest, we are buying a vehicle here, no more running to the border for us.

This is for the benefit of the car dealers in Mexico, too many were purchasing junkers in the states a lot cheaper than the new ones, so the big wigs of the auto dealers greased the government wigs and voala the border is closed to anything bellow 2008.

It's true not every car can be imported. Import the one that can be though, sell the other one or sell and buy something here. Tenencia is an extra tax not having anything to do with car imports. It was imposed for a short time a few years ago and cost us an extra 300 dollars one year, no biggie just a grab. My 2004 van cost me about 1500 tax to import but my yearly registration fees are about 50 a year or 1/4 of what it was in AZ. My full coverage insurance is 1/3 of what it was in the USA and it covers me in 3 countries, USA MEX and Canada. My TelCel plan is 399 (25.00 usd) pesos a month and works in the same 3 countries smart phone data and all no long distance no roaming.

Play by the rules, don't try to cheat the system (the system always wins) and you have a better life.

If you haven't figured it out yet, I am all in. My life is calmer, less stress and the beach is 5 minutes away. It's all good.

Russ: Not just any car can be imported. Until recently there was a moratorium on imports. If your car is Asian it may not be eligible. Age matters as well. Currently it is about 30% to import. There is also an annual tax. Something like a tenencia. I agree with you 100%. We must live by their rules.

If you are gona get a Perm Res status in Mexico, you have already made the decision to be here full time. In that case you by law and common wisdom import your car or buy one locally. That way you are in compliance with the country that you choose to reside in. If you do the temp visa so you can still have your foreign car and the benefits of a foreign residence at the same time getting the benefits of residing in Mexico for what it offers.....you are indeed playing both ends from the middle. It's really easy to do the right thing and avoid the headaches if you simply decide what you want to do. You are not smarter than the system as some of you may think. If you decide to play both ends from the middle and you get caught by either Mexico or the USA you have no one to blame but yourself.

Dear Mr: moisheh, owning property by foreigners is not a problem at all, some people do not understand that an individual needs to have a Government stamp of approval for staying in Mexico, same thing goes for the US, Mexicans buy property in San Diego, in Coronado there is a condominium complex next to the Amphibious Base, we call them the Taco Towers or the Tortilla Flats, 86% owned by Mexicans, those that are there permanently have applied for resident visas, not green cards.

Then you have the ones that purchase or rent property in Mexico and believe that that gives them the right to stay in Mexico with out getting the correct documents to do so, all they are asking for is trouble.

Navegator> No problem with long term rental or owning a house as long as you turn in your FMM before 6 months and get a new one. It is legal to purchase a home with an FMM. There are real problems with upgrading from an FMM. After having a Residente Temporal you supposed to apply for a Residente permanente . With an RP you cannot drive a foreign plated car. One could get a new Residente Temporal but it is expensive and you have to apply outside the country. The Gov. goofed when they made those new rules. The idea was to make it easier for foreigners but the law of unintended consequences kicked in.
