Raleigh to Ocean Lakes

This is obviously a post targeted at a select group of people. But at the same time, I know a lot of folks come down I-40 through Raleigh when traveling to Ocean Lakes. At that point, they travel the same route I go for the most part. Typically, we take I-95 down to Exit 181 in SC and run 501 all the way to 544, then straight to Ocean Lakes.

We're headed down for a Halloween weekend this Friday. I-95 is trying to clear up and I still have four days to go. But 501 in Galivant's Ferry is struggling, too. If things aren't good this weekend, what would you do? DOT is recommending people take 1 down to Southern Pines, then 15-501 down to either 74 or all the way to South of the Border.

But I'm thinking take 40 to Wilmington and then 17. Take that by-pass around Myrtle Beach down to 544 or get off somewhere earlier and jump on 17.

Any suggestions or has anyone heard of good news for us regarding our traditional way to Ocean Lakes?

We arrived yesterday around 6:30. Except for some heavy traffic on 501 & 544, the roads were fine. All lanes open but a lot of muddy shoulders and plenty of downed trees to look at.

although you are there already, for future information US 1 from Raleigh to NC line is pretty good traveling. It is not as good into SC, as it is narrower and a bit curvier, but is still doable.

I took US1 from Columbia all the way to Raleigh on a trip up there pulling TT and it wasn't a bad trip. I often take US1 out of Raleigh to somewhere around the line, as my DD lives near US1 in Holly Springs.

If you go your route..................
Our son lives in Wilmington everything for the most part is fine there but due to construction avoid southbound Rt 17 bridges Between the battleship and Leland from 4 to 7 PM due to traffic backups.

this from the NC DOT website.

I-95 is closed in both directions between Exits 81, I-40, and Exit 97, US-70 due to a crash. I-95 North will reopen by 8 AM on Thursday, 10/20/16. I-95 South will reopen by 8 AM on Friday, 10/21/16. Motorists are advised to use the following detour: I-95 North Traffic use Exit 81, I-40 and stay left on the ramp to get onto I-40 West. Follow I-40 West to Exit 312, NC-42. Turn right onto NC-42 East and continue until reaching I-95. Turn left onto the ramp to re-access I-95 North at Exit 116 near Wilson. I-95 South traffic use 97, US-70. Follow US-70 West then take Exit 318, I-40 East. Follow I-40 East to re-access I-95 South at Exit 81 near Benson.

I-40 reopened Friday afternoon and the North Carolina DOT says I-95 reopened in both directions Monday.

I see that. Good to hear. It also appears 501 has one lane open southbound near Galivant's Ferry. So hopefully, we'll be going the way we usually go. We can't leave home until around 3:00 so I'm doing everything I can to get there before it gets dark if possible.

As for Ocean Lakes, no problems there regarding campsites. They're pretty much "business as usual" for the most part.
