Hi, I would like to know what is the best route to go to Creel, near Copper Canyon. There is a big campground in this little town.

Where would I cross the border, how safe is it to take these route, any recommendations?

I already got there on the train from El Fuerte.

We stayed in the Old KOA and had a great time. We traveled 16 and the only problem was the double & triple parking in Cuauhtermoc. There were times we were in the oncoming lanes or barely able to pass. The last 20 miles or so is a beautiful drive winding into the mountains. We were there in May with perfect weather in Creel, 70s and no bugs, but a bit warm at the canyon floor, 90s.

We took that route a long time ago (1999) - it was an easy ride. With the exception of Chihuahua it was all rural and lightly traveled.

I have not been to Creel nor have I crossed at Presidio so all I can do is post a couple maps - one from my old 2013 Streets & Trips and then from the new MSN using OSM - both compute the same route I think. But I have never taken this route. I suggest contacting the RV park / Hotel to request info.

What is the best way to get there, I am comming from the East USA? My idea was to cross at Presidio Texas near Big Ben. Then on 67 to reach 80D down to Chihuahua. Then should I use 16 or 45 to go through Chihuahua? 16 looks OK on Google Earth.

Should I be aware of any problems on these routes, is it an area that should be avoided? Then I would go down to Puerto Vallarta.

I posted their web address above - I went on it and it still works - but I see no mention of RVs - they do have a phone and email - you can probably contact them directly for information.

I was there in 2004. I crossed into Mexico at Presidio as you plan to do. I have not been back to Creel since then. I can tell you the roads to Presidio on the US side are all good as of this winter as I was just there. Can't say about the MX side.

We stayed at the rv park back in 2007 and then we boondocked around the canyon as well. Boondocking was the best. We parked in one of the new glass-floored look outs or vistas. At night no one was there and we had the place to ourselves. Fantastic views and sunsets.

There was a really nice KOA in town - it's changed hands a few times and is now reported to be sort of derelict.
Here's a blog a couple of years old that describes the former Creel KOA...
http://www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2015/01/wandering-around-creel-chihuahua-mexico.html

What a shame - we camped here in 1999 - the campground had a bar, laundry, gift store and nice spacious grounds. It was expensive and very few RVers visited Creel - at least not enough to keep the campground open.
Currently it sounds like none of the hookups work, water is available from one of the buildings. Back in 1999 some of the hotels offered RV parking but it looked limited to smaller rigs.
