Roll Call Alaska 2014

Anyone traveling to Alaska in 2014? We ,my wife and I, are planning a trip and was wondering if anyone is planning on going in 2014 also.
Would go this year, except we have two weddings to go to in MI, one in late June the other in early August.
So next year we are planning to leave home in NC in mid July, we plan a 2 month trip. We were there in 2004, only that time we were with paid RV tour. Loved it, and would take another paid tour in a 'heart beat', but the cost is now too much.
The reason for the mid July date is looking at the 2013 Alaska postings the wx, road conditions and insects are at their worst. Later in the season all three are better. Plus I want to travel back on the Cassiar Hwy in Sept is supposed to be the best time of the year on the Cassiar, plus less travelers.
Finally, money is an issue with us. So we will 'boon dock', stay at
free or low cost CG's, rest areas, etc. when ever possible.

Hope you all have a great trip and hope to see you some where along the way.

I used a few Yukon CG and really enjoy the free fire wood, and there was always a nice river or lake, for 12$, it is a real deal. This is the only place in all my North American travel that I have seen free fire wood. Other CG normally charges over $5.00 just for a small bundel of wood that is good for an hour at the most.

I also seen Alberta's Icefield Parc CG that supply wood at their campground but they charge $8.00 / night just for the fire permit, still, it is a good deal since you get more for your money and you can run the fire all night for that price.

Notlost: We boondocked wherever we saw nice spots - no place in particular. It's very easy to do. We also did a lot of dry camping in public parks. We really only spent between 5-10 nights in private campgrounds from Arizona to Alaska, if that. Public campgrounds are always our first choice. We also used Mike & Terri Church's Alaskan Camping book and they give some great spots. We didn't drive deep into the boonies on gravel roads but short gravel roads don't bother us if they're wide enough for passing cars. With a motorhome and towing a vehicle sometimes we unhooked the Jeep and scouted out places. Hope this helps.

2gypsies,

we first went to ak in 2008 and are making our second trip this year.
i noticed you said you boondocked a lot.
can you please send me some info on the places you stayed.
in 2008 we mostly stayed in cg's but with a 42' mh that eats a lot of electric, we were nervous about the 30amp electric and also about fitting into the cg's.
since you have a 40', if you found good boondocking spots, that would be a good way for us to get an idea of places to stay.
thanks,

March 2014 fuel and propane prices in Yukon, by community

One station in Whitehorse reduced their price of Regular fuel to $1.309 this past week. The other stations remained higher.

Actually, your regular is cheaper than in Quebec, it is 1.34 regular here. Your Diesel is pretty expensive though, hope it will go down this summer.

Do you know how we can make a reservation? This is a very nice place.

Thanks

No way to make reservations. It is a state park. Another park (you will see this a couple miles before Deep Creek on the right side)is the Ninilchik Scenic Overlook. Possibly 10-12 sites. Most are small. No reservation possible.

One place that we totally enjoyed and wished we stayed longer was Liard River provincial Park. Has the hot springs and the campground was great. We actually fit and we are 40' MH 4 slides and tow.

Liard River

I love Liard Spring too, as we walked on the wooded walkways, there was a Moose feeding in the marsh, It was snowing when we where there in May, but the hot water just feel sooo good.

It is nice to have a spot by the beach with a coal fire that keeps going all night.

There was a host when I was there in 2012

Hi everyone ! I bet everyone is getting excited for this years Alaska adventure. We had a wonderful time last year.
For the sign... what most of us did was a bright sign in the wndow with "Roll Call Alaska" but we also put our RV Net screen names on it so we would know who we were waving to.
As far as the internet situation...We have a mobile mifi from Millenicom that we take in our motorhome. It worked great all over the states and in Alaska. When in Canada we have a mobile internet stick from Telus that we activate when we get into Canada. It also worked great all thru Canada and up to Alaska. We need internet since my husband handles a little business while on the road. If you don't "need" internet but would like it occasionally we found that quite a few rv parks had it also coffee shops etc. We were actually surprised at how many camps had internet and cable TV now. In 2005 there was not as many.
Have a wonderful time!
