ROLL CALL! Atlantic Canada and Maritimes 2014

Since the Alaska roll call threads have been so useful, thought this might be a good idea.

We're going to be leaving Pahrump, NV soon, heading out to explore the Maritime provinces. Looking for ideas on campgrounds, attractions and routes.

Anyone else going that way, we would love to meet along the road! We took the small rig to Alaska last year, but this year we're taking the bus.

Anybody want to buy a Canadian phone? LOL

We checked and have Verizon.it's very expensive but we'll have unlimited texting and off course we know some of the camp grounds have done kind of Wi fi

For those coming to Newfoundland this summer checkout the local festivals. Almost every town has its own festival. For example in Lewisporte in early Aug (Aug 7-11?), they have the Mussel Bed Soiree. Lots of good music, fresh steamed mussels available in many spots.

Or Deer Lake in July 18-21, Strawberry Festival with a very popular band (Masterless Men).

My suggestion is when planning your trip google the town to see what festival they have. There are quite a few Newfoundlanders that do nothing but travel from one festival to another all summer.

Look for a tradition called "Screeching In". I won't explain what it is (and I hope nobody else does either) but if you get the chance jump at it. You won't regret it.

Forillion National Park can be quite interesting. It was organized with lots of $. There are hiking trails and historic homes and more.

:C
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

We have been to Maine lots of times and have been on Deer & Campobello Islands but not Grand Manan. Any input on Forillon National Park?

That depends upon what you have seen going by Maine.

If you haven't done the offshore islands (Grand Manan, Deer, & Campobello) go via Maine and do those islands.

Going around Gaspe also has very interesting things to do and see.

I have been working on routes today. (It was 08 when we were last in the Atlantic provinces, not 09 as I previously posted). I think we might follow our same route on interstates until we get to upper New York state. Instead of going east to Maine I'm wondering about continuing north into Quebec and maybe traveling around the Gaspe' to New Brunswick. Anybody have any thoughts on this? lizzie

I am so glad you started this thread. Roll Call Alaska was invaluable to us last year. We won't be heading up that way until mid-July and I will be anxiously following everyone who precedes us.

Thanks for your responses, Little Kopit and AprilWhine, regarding traveling alone as a woman and the aurora activity. Yes, I'll start a new topic and get my direction straight. Also, thanks for the heads up on the long summer nights in AK.

I went with the SIM Telus for my Droid. Also added US Unlimited calls, and 10GB of data.

We were mostly looking for voice coverage. But, I think I would have looked for the same non contract SIM via Bell if I had it to do over. They both use Telus towers, but the Bell 'backhaul' to the internet is different (believe they splice in via fiber, the 10% of the US fiber ran for military connection to Alaska), and thus the Bell Data is supposed to be faster in some areas the Telus.

(And same comment I've made in other posts. All of this is second hand info, and not validated - so could be not accurate:)!)

Best,
Smitty

Look in this section There is another thread running on cell phone. Browse down.

1) I've read that some can get a deal they find acceptable from their USA provider for roaming when in Canada.

2) Yes, you can buy a card for use in Canada. My unsure memory is that you buy a pay in advance card Convenience stores.
