In late June I will be taking our Toyota Mini Cruiser from NH to Findley State Park in Ohio.

Google Maps gives me these three options-
I-90W
I-86W
I-84 to80W

Any opinions on which would be the better route?
Thanks,
Roger

we leave from just off I-84 in Ct..granted it is just west of Waterbury....but I like 84 to 81 in Scranton to 80 out to In or Oh.....for a few reasons.....can stop at Mohegan Sun @ Pocono Downs for the night easily and safely....there is a nice KOA off 80 around State College,Pa and on 80 in Ohio can stay in the rest area with hookups....and I don't think the traffic is any worst this way than any other....Chuck

I'm from Cincy, my DW from the Boston area. We've driven both via I90-I71 as well as via I84-I81-I80-I71 on multiple occasions. The more southerly route is a little shorter, but the traffic on I84 is a bear thru Connecticut from east of Hartford to Newburgh, and then crowds up again in the segment between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. There are good services and rest areas all along the way. Going via I90 will entail tolls as has been said, and traffic in the Buffalo area as well as when skirting around the east side Cleveland can slow you down if you hit it at the wrong time of day, but in general it’s not bad. And as you can imagine, services and rest area availability are fine along this route as well. As for my preference, in spite of the traffic on I84, I prefer going via I84 from NE and usually do. It’s a little nicer drive in total in my opinion. Hope this helps.

One last thought, your choice of routes may ultimately depend more on how you can best access the park from I71. Coming in on the I84 route I was speaking of brings you to I71 a little south and east of the SP. Coming down from I90 potentially gives you a few more options for taking some other major roads at a little closer to the park’s entrance. Good luck and have fun on your trip.

In my Class B I like 9 and 7 thru NH and Vermont. Very scenic 2 lane and small towns, but nice if you aren't in a hurry. 7 gets you to Troy and then 88 to 86 avoids tolls on 90.
Order is illusion. Chaos is reality. But right or wrong I'm still the captain. 🙂

My personal preference would be the I-86 route. I-90 is a bit shorter and probably a bit quicker, but you pay for it in tolls. I think I-88/I-86 is slightly more scenic, too, though neither is exceptional in that regard. I may also be a little biased from having traveled the thruway too many times going between home (Vermont) and college (RIT in Rochester). I-90 is a little more level than I-88 and I-86, which may be a consideration for a Toyota motorhome.

(If you take I-90 between I-87 and I-88 they don't charge you toll, even though it's otherwise on a toll road—going between those two exits is a special exception. Google maps doesn't seem to know that little factoid.)

Any of the three routes seems basically reasonable to me.

I live in Cincinnati and moved here from NH. When I go back to NH to visit I take I-90.
