Notice the edit! I do not remember the precise road we used, but a few years back we did a day trip in my wife's XC-90 from the wine country in Temecula to Anza- Borrego. The grade we took, I would never do in our 37' Class A. One of the RV parks had a sign warning of the grade. They told me they verbally cautioned people about it. I think there is a high probability that the above recommended route has you using that pass. On our return trip we came around by the Salton Sea back to Temecula. A lot longer, but it is what I would do from Temecula in an RV. Might I suggest you call the park you are going to, or contact Cal Trans or the CHP office that has jurisdiction in that area to be sure.

I am utterly perplexed by this response.I and thousands or perhaps tens of thousands of other RVer's have been running up and down the Montezuma grade since it was completed in the mid sixties with no problems at all.

With billions of miles probably expended every year on 6% grades of the interstate highway system it puzzles me how an 8 percent grade suddenly should not even be considered as a route in and out of the Borrego Valley.

But then I don't hesitate to drop down out of the north side of Big Bear on a long 16 percent grade either so maybe it's just me.

All RVers of course have to use due diligence when choosing their route through mountains but I do not hesitate to recommend the Montezuma grade.

You want to go through Ramona.

From the east side of San Diego you want to go through Santee and Lakeside on Route 67 up to Ramona.

Or if you're more on the north side of San Diego get up to 67 by going through Poway.

In Ramona go straight through town and out the other side which will put you on route 78 up to Santa Ysabel.

At Santa Ysabel turn left onto Route 79 and go up towards Warner Springs.

Just before Warner Springs turn right on County Road S2 which is also called San Felipe Road.

Go down there a few miles and make a left on county road S22 which is also called Montezuma Valley Road.

Up the road a ways on S22 you will come to a long gently winding down grade into Borrego Valley with some real nice views and a couple of pull off places to check out the Valley.

Although the grade is long I don't think it's more than about 6 or 7 percent so just gear down and you should have no problems at all.

Good traveling.

(Edit: 11 miles of 8% grade with some 9%)
