Speed Limits in Canada

One of the really great things about visiting Vancouver Island is the speed limits. On the Island Highway between Campbell River and Nanaimo, posted speed limit is 120. Wow! Max speed limit in the states is 75mph, sometimes 80.

Well, somebody in Canada told me that. Guess I shouldn't believe everything I hear, eh?

And do you?

never could understand why you yanks failed to adopt the metric system. Keep in mind I'm an engineer in a border town and am very fluent in both metric and imperial. Imperial random variables.... metric move a decimal. I don't get how people can be confused by metric

Same for me in Canada. All my thermometers read in degrees F. I calculate my fuel consumption in mpg (without a painful conversion litres per 100 km don't mean anything to me). I measure everything in feet, inches etc. I've set my GPS to read in mph and miles. Everyone I know uses acres not hectares in conversation. Just checked the real estate ads in the local paper in the county where I grew up. All pertinent references are in square feet and acres. Not a single mention of hectares.

This will change with time I suppose. Now the younger clerks at the deli counter will sometimes give you a weird look if you order in lbs. The grey hairs just smile and nod knowingly. But many people in countries that went officially metric many years before us still understood and used non-metric units in everyday life for generations after conversion. My doctor may use centimeters for my height and kilograms for my weight but my young grandchildren will tell me how tall they are in feet and inches and how much they weigh in lbs. And when they want to know if the pool is warm enough to swim, I give them the temperature in Fahrenheit (it just sounds too cold to say 28 degrees C).

And yes, many house measurments ARE in sq ft. It's is what people understand when you are seliing or buying a house. And buying lumber can be in ft/inches. And often food stores show both metric and imperial weights. I guess it's called 'making it work'.

There are 2.2 hectares to a bushel. And four pecks make a bushel. Unless you are a chicken trying to cross the road with cars, trucks, bicyclists and RVers ahizzing by at 120...

Canada is metric (sometimes) Going through Toronto I saw a sign for 1400 sq. ft. house for only $450K. Built with 2X4s and 4X8 sheets of drywall and paneling. Kg in food stores usually have price per lb. listed also. Lb. prices are a lot less with 2.2 lb. per Kg. I don't know where the idea of going 110 kph is safe. Most drivers I saw were going well over that and don't care if they are passing on double yellow lines.

Try to stick to 110 km on highways.
Going slower is going to irritate other drivers and causes people to take chances passing you.
Slower drivers are the dangerous ones causing accidents, even though they themselves think they are the safest ones on the road.
We got stuck behind a motorhome doing 85km on the road between the Yellow Head Highway and Kamloops along the Thompson River. The guy would not even pull over at a rest stop tot let 50+ irritated drivers pass him. Ridiculousโ€ฆโ€ฆ.

Very par for the course on Australian Freeways as well

I thought Canadians measured fuel usage in l/km? Don't they also measure speed in hr/km?

Our fuel usage is measured in liters per 100 km. (l/100 km).
Our speed is measured in kilometers per hour, (km/h)

BTW, even though the US had a revolution to get rid of British control, they are one of the only countries in the world still using the British system of measurement (albeit a modified version called "US Customary")

Virtually the rest of the world uses Metric!
