Hello, We will be going thru St. Louis on our way to Springfield, Illinois. Are there any recommendations about what route to use going thru St. Louis? (44, 55, looping around)?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Weekends are not a fair comparison.

It's a gamble going that way during the week, as it is with most big towns and the odds are much better going around.

Exception: Atlanta. The "outer loop", I-285, is longer and almost always seems to be screwed up somehow.

Thank you everyone for your input.

We made the trip this afternoon and did take 44 straight thru, with no problems. On our return trip, we plan to try the suggested by-pass (coming from the north of course), for comparison.

Thanks again!

Coming from I-44 I would take I-270 south then connect to I-255 into IL. It's about 5 miles between I-44 and I-255. Take I-255 to I-55. You avoid all of the St Louis metro area with that bypass. I-255 can be almost empty at times.
After exiting I-255 onto I-55 as soon as possible get into at least the 2nd lane on I-55. Within a mile of getting onto I-55 the far right lane is an exit only lane.

This one gets my vote, regardless of what you are driving.....unless you need to stop in downtown for some reason.

Both ways will get you to I 55 north but this is the way I go every time.

I go through St Louis about 30 times a year and stopped going through downtown on I 44 about 10 years ago. About 6 months ago I decided to go straight through on 44 just for the heck of it. After sitting in construction and rolling along for about an hour at 5 - 10 mph I now remember why I don't run through St Louis on 44 any more.

Good luck you'll need it. Half the time I'm in the wrong lane and have to exit into downtown and it's not just the right lane it can be the left lane that becomes an exit without any warning. Best advice is to say in the center lane if there is one.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.
