Teton Pass

Going to drive the Teton pass from Victor to Jackson WY (Eastbound) with the truck and trailer in my signature. Will let you know what I like or dislike about it. I have years of semi driving experience and have drove many mountain passes with the trailer.

Gros Venture is a very nice National Campground. Paved road and sites. The camp sites are very far apart. Only D loop has electricity the rest is dry camping. You can get water on the way in. If you have a National Park Pass you will save almost 50 % on camping fees. Moose frequently roam through the park.

West on 20 out of West Yellowstone through Targhee Pass is a good road and basically travel speed limit over the pass. 20 from Targhee Pass to Ashton very flat and good road. Ashton you get on 32 through farm land to Tetonia , this road was a little rough and a little more narrow around a 50-55 mph road. Titania to Victor on 33 is mostly flat and a good road. At Victor you start you climb to Teton Pass on 22 gentle curves in the 45-55 mph. Victor is 6000 above sea level and the pass was around 8000 above sea level. At the pass I had Tow Haul already on. Then turned Exhaust Brake on and manually shifted to 3 gear. My 2019 GMC Duramax is a six speed. Down the grade 10% I had 3 brake applications. Two were in third gear as the truck went from 30 to 40 and needed to slow to 30 again. RPM was around 2300 to 2800. The other brake application was in second gear and I needed to slow to 15 mph for a sharp curve the RPM in second gear was 3200 when I braked for the 15 mph curve.
All in all it was a great trip. Victor to Wilson is a very good road with wide berms, guard rails and extra area around the curves. In summary my total weight is 16000 K. Any of the newer diesels with exhaust brake will have no issues. I did see a Ford 150 eco boast in the brake cool down area. I would not try this pass with a Gas truck with anything over 6000 lbs.
I’m happy I took this route verses going through the Park. The previous two days we were stuck in bison jams of 1 hour and the other 1 and one half hour. Again this is just my experience and your’s may differ.

Please do let us know if this was as bad as some say. I'm planning a trip next summer, and will go from Gros Venture CG to Madison CG., and this looks like the way to go. I would just be westbound.

I have a 2022 F450 and a 16K lbs trailer, with lots of mtn driving exp.

I doubt it would be a good idea to go up hwy 191 all the way thru Yellowstone pulling my 36' 5th wheel.

The drive up through the Snake River Canyon is beautiful and much more enjoyable.

Read the "Mountain West" directory. I will only take our truck over it either way. Since I be the head wrench on this rig, I try to manage damage control. Just recently a semi **** near destroyed a convivence store in Wilson. We have seen many motorhomes and fivers smoking brakes. What happens if Mr. Moose decides to cross in front of you. As another poster stated, the way around is a beautiful drive.

We have done many western passes with our rather heavy 5er. Teton pass we drove up from Jackson to the top, just truck, and then back down to Jackson.

Of course no problem with just the truck but would definitely have a pucker factor to it if having a heavy trailer behind. It would be a very low gear and cycling of brakes affair.

We took it once and even with our current truck and FW, we go around to Alpine Pass for an easier, more enjoyable, less butt puckering ride!

If you are concerned enough to ask, 89 south to 26 is an easy tow, however a little longer. Very scenic along the Snake River and Palisades Reservoir. I chose not to do Teton Pass with my gear; probably saved fuel and certainly reduced any anxiety.
