I am planning a trip from the Dallas area to Montana for the summer and would like to know about us hwy 83 from Childress, texas to North Platte, Nebraska.
Is most of this route suitable for pulling a fifth wheel? I prefer a shoulder to pull off onto in the event I have mechanical trouble. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks dick

Another good place to stay overnight along US83 is McCook, Nebraska. It has a very nice campground at Karrer city park that only costs a $5-$10 donation for 50A electric pull-thrus with big shade trees, available potable water, and a dump.

McCook is a neat little town with a hilly downtown, brick streets, and the only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in Nebraska. The house is still privately owned, so no tours are possible. The town was begun by the Burlington railroad, but now relies on agriculture, ethanol-production, and oil for its survival.

The casino is just north of the state line on US 83 as one crosses into South Dakota from Nebraska. West side of the road, very large parking area, one could overnight there very easily.

But, that is a lot farther north than the North Platte Nebraska asked about. But US 83 is good all the way to I-90 in South Dakota if one should decide on that route to Montana. Fact is, it is good past there, but one has to go east and then north towards Pierre, SD, which is NOT on the way to Montana.

we have used 83 up to northern NE many times. It's two lane but not a problem. Traffic thins out noticeably after you get north of Garden City, KS. Since we are users of rest stops and walmarts, I can't tell you much about rv parks along the way, but lots of the little towns have a city park you can park at..no hookups.
There are a couple city/county rv parks we use..one about 20 miles south of Shamrock TX and one in Canadian TX just before you cross the river on the north side of town.
will warn you about staying overnight at Thedford NE. The trains runs every thirty minutes all day and all night and they blow their horns twice coming through the little town.
if memory serves me right, there is a Casino just north of the SD state line..you can overnight there.

Often searching by highway number doesn't work well, but in this case 'us83' gave this result right away.
