Planning a fifth wheel road trip from the San Jose CA area to NC and back. We are thinking of taking a route from SJ to Barstow CA and taking I-15 north to US 2 traveling east to Michigan, continuing to NC and then return trip via I-40. We thought taking US 2 would enable us to travel east through states that we have not been to before like North Dakota and other states traveling east to Michigan. We have traveled east via I-40 several times going east so we know that route pretty well. How is the US 2 route for fifth wheel travel? Our fifth wheel is 34 ft. with a 13.5 ft. height. Truck + fiver length is 50 Ft. Are there issues with bridge/overpass height restrictions on US 2? Also, any issues with diesel fuel availabilty? on US 2? We are limited to using No. 2 diesel in our 2008 silverado 3500 so using biodiesel greater than 5% is not an option.
We would be traveling during May of this year.
Any comments on our planned route and issues noted are very much appreciated.

Hwy 2 is highly recommended to get to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Fort Peck COE campground in eastern Montana is a winner - huge grassy sites.

This is a huge trip you're planning. Hope you've got a good part of the summer for completing it. Have fun!

We've taken US 2 from the middle of ND thru MT and it's a good two lane highway. Forget cell phone use except in the towns and the towns aren't close together. You will not have any problems getting diesel these are all farm/ranching communities and many people have HD trucks. You'll find out what Big Sky State means on that road.
