Is overnighting, not camping, permitted at this Walmart. Thought I saw that it was banned after some idiot thought it was OK to build a fire ring with nearby decorative river rocks the proceed to have himself a campfire next to his trailer which had not moved in quite some time.

It isn't discouraged at all. You'll find 4 or 5 of those signs in the entire territory, at rest areas close to towns that have a "competing" RV park. For Yukoners, boondocking is at least as common as getting a campsite.

I've been woken up and "shood" (sp?) out of rest areas in BC by the police. Mounties I guess?

I'm not real familiar with Canada, but I've done the trip down the Alcan 8 or 9 times. There are signs at every rest area I saw that stated, "no overnight parking". I've taken my chances many times, and been asked to leave twice. Both times in BC though. But I've seen the signs in Yukon also.

Like Northern Quebec, we can boonduck anywhere especialy when we go fishing or hunting, we sometime have dozen of campers near a good fishing lake or you can be by your own for weeks no problems.

But if you go near towns, especially in the south, boonducking is normaly not allowed and you will have signs all over.

After seeing all of the pictures of camping spots at the Whitehorse Walmart I didn't see one that compared to camping at a real campground that we experienced on our Alaska/Canada trip. Whether private, P.P. State Parks, National Parks, or boon docking sites. We shopped at the Whitehorse Walmart a couple of times and saw all of the "campers". Can't say it is something I would want to do if at all possible.

I've stayed at the whitehorse walmart. Camping off the road, boondocking, in Yukon is discouraged, and there are signs stating against it across the territory, especially at rest areas. I've never stayed longer than 4-6 hours in rest areas close to town, but near destruction bay, there are several paved pullouts without camping signs that seem to be fair game for an overnight stay. The far side of the lake is pretty desolate, and beautiful. I spent a night there in September and woke up to 2" of snow and 20F. Low mark had hit 0F that night. Glad to have an Arctic Fox....

Allstays has a filter for Walmart Ask to Park plus a lot more. I found it to be an extremely good app. Whitehorse pops up, tap the phone number, just couldn't be easier.

We stayed at the Whitehorse Wal-Mart on July 11 2013 on our way to Alaska for one night. the lot was full of campers, RVs & Big Rig Trucks. (we still went in and ask, they had no problem with us staying. On our return trip we stayed for several days (July 28/29) while waiting to have a RV overhead window replaced in town. They were most accommodating to us.

Yes, the Whitehorse Walmart continues to host RVers year-round.

There was a bit of a tussle in late 2013 regarding the handful of full-timers parked there, with generators and yard gear surrounding their homes. I believe the Walmart announced they were no longer allowing fulltime living on the parking lot. I suspect one of the issues was the space was required for snow storage when the lot is cleared of snow. There are some good sledding hills popping up in various parking lots throughout Whitehorse this winter.

Canadian Tire does not allow RVers to park overnight on its lot, which is much smaller and shared with numerous stores at the strip mall next door.

I also noticed during the September migration southward that it was sometimes difficult to get a regular parking space to go shopping at the Walmart. The RVers were camped throughout the parking lot and taking up to four spots for a single RV. Often had to weave through and around the camping gear scattered here and there. It was somewhat frustrating.

We were at Walmart in Whitehorse last August and the parking lot was full of "overnight" campers. Several were trailers with the jacks down and no tow vehicle in sight. And, as Joe says, there were steps down, slides out on motorhomes and trailers, and even lawn chairs out at a couple of RVs that were obviously traveling together. The only parking lot we saw in 3 months with more RVs camped in the parking lot was at the Soldotna Fred Meyer store on the weekend that dip netting for reds began on the Kenai River.

Thanks Joe B. Straight from the horse's mouth answer.

We are looking at a double stop at Whitehorse. A multi night north bound. Do a CG for that. A resupply stop headed south with maybe an overnight.

Last there in 2011. What a circus Walmart carpark was!
