Buffalo Bay Campground at Legendary Waters Resort also operates a remote campground called Point Detour โ€œWildernessโ€ Campground. There are no services. But I think they have several portable toilets.

My first stay at Buffalo Bay, there was no new casino. The Ojibway fellow running the campground mentioned the โ€œsinging sandsโ€ at Point Detour. So with a reservation map I dodged porcupine and deer and found the place. You can really rub your palm over the sand and it make sounds. I thought that was really cool.

We stayed right on the lake at Memorial Park in Washburn. Seems like it was $25/night for tree-shaded, back-in, electric-water sites, but there are FHU sites that were all filled with seasonal campers. The park has an RV dump for the non-FHU sites, a centrally located restroom-shower building, and a boat ramp. No laundry room, so we went to a laundromat on the highway in town.

We made that trip this past summer. Started in Mackinaw City, stayed at the KOA, then up to Munising (Picture Rocks), stayed at the Munising City Park (which is right on the water), then to Copper Harbor, stayed at Ft Wilkins, left the camper there while we went out to Isle Royale, then on over to Apostle Islands. We stayed in Bayfield at the casino campground. It was more or less on the water. They had a shuttle that took us down to boat launch place which was handy.

We've stayed at South Shore Campground in Cornucopia. The Good Earth Outfitters offer an excellent boat tour of the sea caves. There is also a very nice municipal campground in Washburn called Thompson West End. It's right on Lake Superior but they don't take reservations so it might be hard to get in.

Thanks I'll check those out! It's going to be the first leg of our summer vacation that will take us to The Apostle Islands, Isle Royal NP, Voyageurs NP, Theodore Roosevelt NP, and Glacier NP.

Two of my favorites are Little Sand Bay Campground (closer to the Apostle islands) or the campground in Herbster, WI.

I have stayed here several times. You can spend days touring the area by car, rented kayak, boat or ferry.
