Bad Lands North Dakota

Valentine NE, Mission ND, White River, Wanblee, Kadoka, Bad Lands NP, Scenic, Green Valley, Rapid City
As we came out o?f Valentine we had a foggy morning and some road construction. But as the sun came out we found South Dakoda to be a lot like Nebraska, but I think less trees. Rolling hills and grass lands with Cattle and Horses. We crossed the White River just south of Kadoka, witch to my surprise is really โ€œWhiteโ€. This was where we got our first look at the Bad Lands, and like so many places we have seen, pictures will never describe how amazing it is.
We layed over at the truck stop at Kadoka and waited out a night of rain and went into the park in the morning. We came in from the east side of the park where the plains simply falls away to the view of the valley that is the Bad Lands. The second pull out has plenty of room for big rigs and we spent most of the day there trying to take in all the different trails. Unlike some parks we have been in you can pretty much wander around anywhere. It was wet in the morning, witch makes the mud stick to your shoes. But in only a couple of hours the place became dry enough to walk most everywhere.
We tried to use the RV Park that the Park provides but found the accommodations to be much hander at the little town of Interior, The Bad Lands RV Park. In our two day stay we got to visit the Wall Drug Store and seen Big Horn Sheep, Bison roaming the hills at the West Gate. We have hundreds of photos and movies. And we have posted some but you have to be there to watch the sun change the looks of the Buttes and Spirals and layers of color in the land as it moves across the sky.

Thanks Drew - youโ€™re probably correct but, with the NPS, itโ€™s sometimes hard to be certain.

We've camped there several times in the past couple years in our truck camper - never have a problem. It's one of our favorite campgrounds.

The policy change statement is somewhat confusing, at least to me. Does "Mortor homes, pull behind trailers, and other recreational vehicles greater than 18 feet in length are prohibited." mean all pull behind trailers are excluded or only those which exceed 18 feet in length? And their spell check seems to be inoperative, "Mortor" instead of "Motor"?

I think it means any RV greater than 18 feet in length, including but not limited to motorhomes and trailers, but it certainly isn't the clearest writing. Partly that's because motor homes and pull-behind trailers covers virtually all RVs; the only things left are truck campers, and it makes no sense to me to allow a 17' truck camper but disallow a car with a pop-up camper.

Steveh27 - Thanks for the update and great pics. Sage Creek was an unexpected jewel when we camped there a couple of years back. It was much more crowded on our visit with mostly younger tent campers but we really enjoyed their company and energy/

The Dakotas are under rated. I hve been going there since the 1960s.

When I was there a few years ago in April I drove 12 miles on the washboard dirt road to the Sage Creek campground, their back country site without utilities. It does have vault toilets & tables. I was the only one there besides many buffalo. Had to be careful when hiking to not get cut off by them. I see they now have changed the rules:

One of our favorite parks - and not quite as crowded as some. We're heading back that way in Sept ... and then up to Teddy Roosevelt park in N Dakota, which is another mind-blowing area.

WE just got back from the same trip, with slightly different routing. Interior was a little sparse for my wife, so we stayed a few nights at a very nice campground in Wall, just across the tracks from Wall Drug.
FYI: The Badlands you visited are in "South Dakota". Have a great trip. Are you going on into the Black Hills?
