Campgrounds Philly?

Moving the daughter, SIL, and grand-daughter to downtown Philly next week.

Now thinking about the future - Any suggestions for CG's near Philadelphia? We want to avoid driving into the city proper, so within a reasonable distance to mass transit (with overnight parking, if needed) would be preferred. Idea would be to set up a base camp, commute into one city or the other, and stay a few days with the family, then return to the base camp.

We are currently at the Campus Park & Ride mentioned a couple of times in previous posts. We have been here on and off for the last year and have had no problems. Sure, it is adjacent to a couple of rough areas but the property, itself, is surrounded by high fences and barbed wire and has a gated entry.

Also, since the property is a retired trucking terminal, there is warehouse space accessible from the other side of the property. The new tenants of that space is Customs and Boarder Patrol and, quite frankly, they have added enough cameras (to the entire property) and electric fences to make it appear (from the front of the property) more secure than Fort Knox. By the appearance, someone would have to be crazy to pick this property to target for nefarious purposes.

So come enjoy lots of concrete (read: level parking)! Ten minutes to the airport, UPenn campus and hospitals, fifteen minutes to City Center! The shuttle buses that run 24-7 (to the UPenn hospitals) will also get you to the buss and subway lines.

There are a couple of downsides... only a few spaces have sewer connections but there is a functional dump station. Second, there is a train yard behind the property. Someone who likes an occasional train horn blow will love it... light or easily irritated sleepers, not so much.
This is the best actual desciption I have read. Is there any chance you can take pictures? I have a wheelchair lift on my class a that sticks out about 6' right behind front passenger tire. Will I have enough room? Tks.

Each RV space is the width of two tractor trailer loading docks and the couple feet between the two... about 22 or 23 feet, I'd say. The only thing that denotes the space restrictions is that the power panels mounted on the wall are located every two doors. You'll have no trouble at all with space for your lift.

Thanks for the post blangen. Campus Park and Ride appears to be a worthwhile option.

Thanks all! Sounds like either mentioned places may work for our needs. Most likely we will be using the space pretty much for short term storage, rather than living in, as we can stay in my daughter's place while visiting. How is the drive in to get to the Campus location? I've been in some pretty tight locations in Philly before - to the point where I doubt I'll even drive the F150 anywhere after getting to the "campsite". But if it is relatively easy in, easy out to enter/exit the city, that would be a plus!

Sits next to I-76 (and very close to I-95) so easy in and out. It is a retired trucking terminal, after all.

We stayed at Timberline also once, no complaints. We drove in to city and had to pay $15 to cross a bridge with just the truck because of the weight class it is registered for towing. Won't make that mistake again.

Also recommend Timberlane, but clean out your rig like you are going into a foreign country,
stay safe.

It's definitely not your typical CG. But, if you want to visit Philadelphia it's probably a good choice. The rates seem reasonable for the location.

Thanks for sharing.

I live in Bucks County, it is about 45 minutes from that area...

I WOULD NEVER STAY THERE..... It is right off Grays Ferry Avenue, in South West Philadelphia .. I have spent a lot of time in that area in the past for work and would never tell anyone to stay close..

We used to frequent the Ryder Truck Facility right there, and boy were there stories...
I would stay at Timberline and drive in..or get to public transportation...

BUT than again, its only my opinion...

I take it the immediate surrounding area maybe a bit rough. But it sounds like the facility itself is secure. Which is what matters.
Philly does not have a lot of convenient camping options.
Be great to hear from someone that has actually stayed there.

We've stayed at Timberlane in Clarksboro several times and traveled into Philly on the PATCO train. The Collingswood station is about 20 minutes from the campground, and does have overnight parking available. The fare to the Market St station in Philly is just $2.60, and connections to the SEPTA trains can be made there if needed.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL CAMPGROUND - NO LAKES. NO MOUNTAINS. NO GRASS.
