Is there enough in this park to do that a 7 day stay would be enjoyable? Including visiting attraction in Colorado Springs. And would also like to know what sites are great for a 36Ft. 5th wheel with great views. Dh and I are going to do some time at RMNP and then head down to This state park and stay. We want a relaxing vacation and not long drives here there and everywhere since it will take 2 days to get out there. We have 2 weeks and we figured we would do Grand Tetons and Yellowstone another trip. Every trip we have taken out west seems to be so rushed that we haven't even ever had a campfire out there! Our problem we try to see so much in a small time frame that we miss out on just enjoying. Think we will go first 2 weeks in September. Im sure the weather will still be nice. Thanks, Tara

Been there. If you get into the upper loop you might get a site & treated to a spectacular view over Colorado Springs, especially at night.

Lots to do around COS. Check out Trip Advisor.

We stayed several days at Cheyenne last year. Beautiful park with great views! I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Loss of good suggestions of things to in the area. One I haven't seen mentioned that I'd recommend is the zoo. We really enjoyed it, especially the giraffe feeding and the elephant feeding.

If you don't mind forest service and no services other than dump stations, check out White Star. Beautiful scenery, at the base of independence pass. 30 mins to Leadvile, 30 mins to Buena Vista. Aspens on the other side of Independance pass( I don't care about Aspen but the drive is beautiful.)

yes Mueller state park is beautiful. we stayed there for 3 days in 2007. we just never seemed to get use to the high altitude. After what everyone has suggested we think we will do RMNP first for a couple days, then Buena Vista area the Colorado springs. Any suggestions for campgrounds around Buena vista and surrounding area? Thanks Tara

Arrowhead Point Campground in Buena Vista is our favorite. It is out of town but not far, is quiet with great views and the owners are great.

Can't help on Cheyenne SP other than to say it is beautiful. We have always waited too late to get reservations to stay there. LOL My wife grew up in Colorado Springs/Woodland Park area so we spend a week or so there every couple of summers. Most of the time we end up staying at the Garden of the Gods RV Park in town. Most of the campground in this area are old, as this is a very old tourist destination in the US. One time we stay at the Broadmoor Hotel when we didn't have our RV, as it is a comfortable place to stay.

Lots to do in the area. One day we will spend in Manitou Springs wandering the shops, take the inclined railroad to the top of Pike's Peak, tour of the Air Force Academy is nice and interesting, the Cliff Dwelling are OK, the Cave of the Winds, drive up to Cripple Creek and Victor one day, ride the narrow gauge railroad and attend the melodrama in Cripple that evening. I don't remember us ever running out of stuff to do, the Olympic training center is located there also, some of the grandest of Victorian Homes (Painted Ladies) are located in the Springs.

For a big city atmosphere, the Springs is a good place to spend some time. We lived in Ouray for close to 10 years after moving from Alaska, prior to moving here to the swamp country. (still on joe b.'s list of top ten dumbest things he has ever done)

There are a couple of campgrounds on the north side of Woodland Park where we have stayed as well, on the road out toward Deckers. The Garden of the God's Park is not to be missed as mentioned above. Those rocks really do look like two kissing camels. LOL

we were in that area for a week last june and did most of the stuff listed by others. we, however, decided to stay at Mueller state park (on 67 south of divide) rather than Cheyenne mtn. Mueller had forest around the sites while Cheyenne was pretty much in the open . it was a little farther to drive to do stuff but we felt that it was worth it.

Thanks to everyone for all the info!enjoyed your 3 part blog ependydad! Very nice and you have beautiful family. We have been out to western Colorado and absolutely beautiful out there but a tally the only part of Colorado we haven't seen is Rmnp. Have been to Colorado Springs but that was back in 2007. We just want to spend 7 days in one area where we can hike and just enjoy the scenery.

This!

There is soooo much to see and do in Colorado Springs. Yes, it's a big city, but it's not overly difficult to get around. And yes, there are a lot of other places to visit in Colorado. But your post indicates that you've made this selection, and it's not a bad one at all. There's a diversity in the Springs for things to see and do, to accommodate most anyone's preferences.

In addition to the sights mentioned in the blog pages, there's also Cave of the Winds, The Will Rogers Shrine, The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Seven Falls, the Air Force Academy, including the chapel, the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, The World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, Miramont Castle, the Olympic Training Center, and instead of driving up to the top of Pikes Peak, you might enjoy the cog railway in Manitou Springs. And downtown Manitou Springs is a wonderful place to visit as well. Plenty to do in the time you've got for the Springs.

Since you're planning for September, you have a bit of time before needing to make a reservation. And you'll need one at Cheyenne Mountain SP, even in September. Weather will be enjoyable at that time as well.

For RMNP, be aware that you'll definitely need a reservation if you're planning to stay inside the park. In September, there's really only one choice to consider and that's Moraine Park. Glacier Basin, the other CG about 5 miles up the road, closes the first week in September. And September is also part of the Elk bugling season, so it will be very busy in Moraine Park. You can reserve 180 days out from the dates you want. Some of the commercial parks in Estes Park will still be open, but they will also be busy as their season winds down, for the same reason as above.
