Chicago Campground or hotels?

We are picking up a 30 foot MH after we get fly to Chicago late afternoon, and would really like to stay a night to see the sights in Chicago before we head for a random road trip to Florida.

We see that there is a campground or 2 about a hour away from Chicago....does anyone have any suggestions as to whether we should pick up the RV and then find a campground and camp that night or maybe wait till the next day to pick up the RV because getting around in Chicago would be too hard in an RV? Or perhaps picking it up and parking it at a hotel?

We have never had a MH before!
Thanks,
Christina

First off, if would be illegal to even drive that RV into most of downtown Chicago. Secondly, due to traffic congestion and the narrow street design of most of the downtown Chicago area you would have both of your mirrors taken off within the first few minutes.

Fly in, stay downtown, see the sights, then go pick up your RV and head out. Also, use caution while in the windy city, murder rates are through the roof!

Do your city tour and then pick up the motorhome. Getting around in that city is a nightmare. Have a plan in place on what you want to see before you get there so you don't waste time driving aimlessly.

A good way to see highlights of a big city is to take a small van tour. We did that for San Francisco and really enjoyed it. Our daughter, who lives there, took it with us and was really impressed. It will take you to all the highlights of the city - many of which you will miss if trying to do it in one day on your own.

Since you've never RVd before you're going to have a lot to absorb after picking it up and better to do it when you're fresh, not when you're planning to tour a city the same day and trying to find a campground.

Have a good trip!

If you want to look around the city I recommend that you arrive there and do so the day before you pick up the motor home. You cannot drive around down town Chicago.

Won't be fun, or even feasible, to drive it downtown. You could camp outside of town and take the train in from any direction. Where are you picking up the new mh?
