I think The state is trying to get lake Holloman closed, not the fam camp. The lake is probably 3 miles from the entrance to base and the Fam camp. It is a small body of water that in the past was part of a sewage lagoon. It is the lowest point around so natural drainage ends up in it. When Holloman got a modern sewage plant years ago the lagoon was no longer used. Additional land around the lake was acquired from other public lands with the documented understanding the area would remain open to public for uses as was allowed before acquisition. So while it is USAF land, It is fenced off from the base and open to the public from US 70. The Fam amp is just inside the main gate and across the street from base housing.
