We have stayed at GSP several times and have been in site #249, 270 and 252, that I can recall. You are on Middle Lake (it is in the middle between the campground and the main highway, then the beach and ocean). Our sites have all been on Gator Road and it is named that for a reason!
The last time we went and were in site #249, we backed our RV in and were getting out setting things up. Our daughters, who were 6 and 3, were getting their bikes out and a neighbor came over to let us know that there was a gator IN HIS BOAT that was sitting right on the edge of the lake. He had rowed in after a morning of fishing on the lake, went and got him some lunch and was heading back out to fish, but the alligator had taken up residence and was sunning himself in his boat.
I have seen people water skiing in the lake, so I am sure that motors are allowed and I have seen many people in boats, canoes and kayaks all over the lake, so I guess that answers that question.
Most of the lakefront sites will not have a lot of shade, but the ones on the other side of the road have some. (Before Hurricane Ivan, there was lots and lots of shade and much of it is growing back, but it is taking some time.)
One of the worst storms we have ever been in occurred there during a March spring break several years ago. We went to bed with our awning out because it was beautiful weather, but we were expecting rain the next day. About 6 am, our RV was rocking and rolling and awning was trying to turn the RV over. DH and I both ran out and got our awning in......our neighbor, who had a brand spanking new fifth wheel wasn't so lucky. We saw his go flying back over top of the camper and parts fly everywhere.
We really like the place, and plan to make a trip there this year, sometime. I I hope you have a great time.
