Lake Somerville, Texas - Which Campground?

I’m new to the Houston camping scene, but on another thread Lake Somerville was recommended. I see five campgrounds on the lake. 3 COE and 2 state parks. We have a state park pass.

Any thoughts on what the better of the 5 are? We are going to bike and canoe.

When the kids were younger, we would go to Nails Creek at least once a month. They would get on their bikes and spend hours riding around in the park. They have sites pretty close to the water as well.

We stayed at Lake Somerville State Park and had an entire campground loop all our own! Of course that was in mid-winter, not summer or early fall.

When we headed north from the park, we stopped in Dime Box for kolaches, just as we would do 50 years ago when we were in graduate school at A&M. Unfortunately Dime Box no longer has a Czech bakery, or much of anything else for that matter. So we missed out on a chance for fresh-baked kolaches . . . probably by a couple of decades!

I would recommend Nails Creek State Park since you have the Pass already.

Huntsville has 157 camp sites and 30 cabins/shelters. How is that a 'smaller venue?'

If you have a Facebook account, you might want to look for the groups RV Texas Y'all Community and Texas RV Camping. They are both closed groups you can join to share information specifically related to RV camping in Texas. Join one and ask your question. The members there will steer you to the right park. I haven't camped there yet, so I can't give you an opinion.

We always stay at Yegua Creek on our way to/from the RGV. Nice park. Easy in-out for us.

You might try Huntsville State Park for a smaller "venue".
