We will be camping for 9 days at straits state park in Michigan. What are the must see and do things near here? We have 2 dogs so this limits us somewhat on the amount of time we can leave the camper, even though we have remote temperature monitors. We also do things with our dogs if not to hot.

Here is my list of things to see/do (in addition to those above): Kitch-iti-kipi (the big spring) near Manistique, Ocqueoc falls near Rogers City, take a drive and or a hike through the Pigeon River Forest and look for elk. I am not sure what kind of dogs you have, but you could run them on the state land after mid July.

Thanks for the info on places to go and do so far.
Bridge toll is not a concern at this time, probably cost me more in diesel fuel to get there, lol.

Really? It's the one and only toll road in the state of Michigan! For $4 I'll take it all day long....

You go right ahead, and I don't blame you, but if the vehicle is tall, the toll is 5$us/per axle and the axle count is determined by counting tires in a side view not by engineering standards.

So, with my rear axle being a tandem and not a dual, they want us and our less than 10K# coach to pay the same 15$us toll and a Greyhound.
That cost is just a little short of the fuel difference to drive around. So, less I absolutely have to, I never pay for that bridge.

On the Ambassador Bridge, we pay passcar toll.

I asked the bridge authority about it and they replied that it is a weight based toll. So, I guess their education says that tires is equal to weight. Interesting?

Matt
I think you just got an I?mprperly trained toll both attendant one time. I've been across that bridge about 20 times, towing my TT, and never paid $5 per axle.

How tall is tall? Weight based toll? We crossed with our 34' fifth wheel for eight bucks or $2 an axle. Seems reasonable and worth it. Of course I don't know what the OP has.

This is the toll schedule:

Mackinac Bridge Tolls. Passenger vehicles cost $2 per axle or $4 per car. This includes passenger cars, vans, motorcycles, station wagons, SUVs, pick-up trucks, and school buses. All other vehicles, including tractor trailers, buses, motor homes and step or cube vans cost $5 per axle.

If you are going to be there June 30, that is Engineer's Day at the Soo Locks. That is the best day of the year to visit the Soo Locks. You can walk right up to the ships as they pass through the locks, the only day of the year that is possible. All other days of the year you are limited to the viewing platform only.

The $8 for truck and trailer it's worth every penny to cross the bridge. $4 for just the vehicle. We were just there a few days ago and will be crossing back in a few days. Love crossing it.
